The Grove City boys basketball team ran into a DeSales sqaud with a
few too many horses at the Ohio Scholastic Play-by-Play Classic at St.
John Arena Saturday.
The Stallions (7-3) jumped out to an early lead and kept the
advantage in a 62-49 win.
"We're finishing games off a little better than we have in the past,"
DeSales coach Blair Albright said. "That's something we've definitely
stressed in practice. I thought we did such a good job early in the game
of putting the game into a position where we were in control that we
wouldn't let them climb all the way back."
DeSales, which won at Hartley 57-47 Friday, was led by senior Elijah
Allen's 28 points.
Allen was named the Stallions' MVP in the contest.
Senior point guard Dane Johnson and freshman guard Nick Kellogg each
contributed to the win.
"I thought Dane and Nick Kellogg had a great floor game," Albright
said. "Dane had nine assists and Nick had six. We get 15 assists out of
our backcourt and Nick only turned it over one time. So aside from the
11 points he scored, he did that."
From Grove City's perspective, the experience could be a positive
when it comes time to compete in the postseason.
"I wasn't at all happy with losing, but they're an outstanding team
and they have some great players," Greyhounds coach Greg Waits said. "I
tell our kids all the time that our non-league schedule's as tough as
any around. We're going to play good non-league people because we want
to be ready and battle-tested when the tournament comes."
Senior Michael Agunga led the 'Hounds with 9 points.
Junior Elijah Smurthwaite and senior A.J. Anderson totaled 8 points
apiece.
While moral victories don't show up in the win-loss column, Grove
City was able to get after it on the boards, despite the Stallions'
height.
The Greyhounds (7-2) pulled down 23 offensive rebounds.
"That's something that shouldn't happen," Albright said. "They're a
physically strong team, but if we would've kept them off the glass the
game wouldn't have been close. That's something we need to do better.
"I have a lot of respect for the way Grove City plays. They're strong
and they get after it every single play. I think we need to do a better
job of bringing that intensity every single time."
DeSales hosts Cleveland St. Ignatius Friday (8 p.m.) and Athens
Saturday (8 p.m.) before getting back into league play at home against
St. Charles Jan. 19 (8 p.m.).
Grove City hosts Dublin Jerome Tuesday followed by a home game with
Reynoldsburg Friday (7:30 p.m.).
