BOYS: DESALES 61 | EASTMOOR ACADEMY 55
Supporting cast delivers for DeSales

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Division II district championship game between top-seeded Eastmoor Academy and second-seeded DeSales turned out to be everything it was hyped to be, with both teams’ thoroughbreds making pivotal plays in the second half.

But in the end, it was two of DeSales’ lesser-known players who secured the victory.

Freshman Nick Kellogg scored 13 of his career-high 24 points and 7-foot-1 junior center Sean Hobbs blocked five shots in the fourth quarter, helping DeSales beat Eastmoor Academy 61-55 in the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.

"I told the guys in the huddle before the fourth quarter that it’s a team effort, that’s it’s not about heroes, but the five guys on the floor working in unison for the same goal," DeSales coach Blair Albright said. "That just shows the essence of a team, with guys you wouldn’t usually regard to be your star players stepping up to make the big play.

"Sean was pivotal, making those big blocks at the key juncture of the game. And Nick, what can you do about that freshman? What a gamer."

Nick Kellogg, who went 8 of 15 from the field and 7 of 8 at the free-throw line, hit a pullup jumper with 42 seconds remaining to give DeSales a 57-53 lead.

DeSales’ one-two punch of Alex Kellogg (17 points, nine rebounds) and Elijah Allen (14 points, 11 rebounds) also delivered.

"Obviously, my brother and Elijah are the go-to guys for this team and it was obvious Eastmoor was paying special attention to them and Dane Johnson, so I just tried to step up and make some plays for my team," Nick Kellogg said.

The Stallions (20-3) will face Dresden Tri-Valley at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the regional at Ohio University.

Ronald Steward had 20 points and six assists to lead Eastmoor (19-4), which couldn’t wrest the lead from DeSales after Nick Kellogg made two free throws for a 50-49 lead with 3:13 remaining.

To that point, there had been 11 lead changes.

"Whenever we took the lead, they took it right back," Eastmoor coach Sean Taylor said. "We could never get the lead long enough to get them out of that 2-3 zone that was so effective all game."

Four of Hobbs’ blocks came in the final 1:30 as Eastmoor tried to close the gap.

Eastmoor outrebounded DeSales 39-33, but the Stallions made 18 of 22 free throws to just 7 of 14 for the Warriors.

Jaquez Terry had 13 points and 11 rebounds for Eastmoor.

At the start, each team tried to impose its style on the other.

By employing a stingy 2-3 zone with Hobbs in the middle, DeSales kept Eastmoor from darting into the lane, often forcing the Warriors to settle for perimeter jumpers.

The Stallions, in turn, scored most of their points in transition with leapers Alex Kellogg and Allen driving to the basket effectively.

DeSales took command with a 10-0 run spanning the first and second quarters.

Trailing 27-16 with a minute left in the half, Eastmoor scored on three straight putbacks and trailed just 27-22.

Just when the Stallions appeared ready to take control in the third quarter, leading 37-29, Steward took over, scoring nine points in a 9-2 run.

DeSales led 44-42 entering the fourth quarter.

Stallions pull away from the Warriors late

DeSales senior Alex Kellogg gets off a shot over Eastmoor defender Jaquez Terry during Friday's Division II district championship game in the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.

In a game with play perhaps more befitting a state final four or a regional championship setting, the DeSales boys basketball team defeated Eastmoor 61-55 in the Division II district championship game at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum Friday.

The Stallions (20-3) weren't in control of the game until late in the fourth quarter -- and in fact didn't take its final lead until there was 3:13 to play -- but had too many weapons en route to their second straight district championship.

The Warriors (19-4) came back from a nine-point deficit in the first half to lead twice in the third quarter, and once in the fourth, but couldn't grab control of the game down the stretch.

The fate of the Stallions again came down to, in part, the play of junior center Sean Hobbs.

While Hobbs wasn't dominating for much of the game, unlike his district semifinal performance against Linden a week earlier, he picked a fine time to take over in the paint.

Hobbs blocked four shots in the final two minutes -- he had six in all -- keeping a lid on the Eastmoor basket and preserving the DeSales lead.

"We knew he was a good player and a force in the middle," Eastmoor coach Sean Taylor said. "We could never get them out of their two-three zone. To do that we'd have had to have hit some threes and he could just stand in the middle and control things. They're a solid squad."

Hobbs put an exclamation mark on his day by swishing two free throws in the waning seconds.

Also huge was the play of freshman guard Nick Kellogg, who scored a career-high 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field. He was 7 of 8 at the free throw line.

"It's a team effort," Albright said. "That's what we talked about in our pregame talk. We said if we were going to do this it wasn't going to be about heroes, but it was going to be about the five guys on the floor playing team defense and being unselfish with the ball.

"It just so happened that (Nick Kellogg's) shots were the best shots. I think they did a great job with their defensive game plan making sure that (point guard) Dane (Johnson) didn't hurt them too much, or even Alex (Kellogg) and Elijah (Allen), but it just showed the essence of team that (Hobbs and Nick Kellogg) were able to do so much."

Usual suspects for taking over the game, seniors Allen (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Alex Kellogg (17 and 10) each had quietly solid games, but it was unsung players like Hobbs and Nick Kellogg who put DeSales over the top.

The DeSales boys basketball team enjoys a moment with its district championship trophy following Friday's tournament final win over Eastmoor at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum.

"We knew exactly what (Alex) Kellogg and Allen could do," Taylor said. "They're really not good shooters so they're going to go to the hole hard and they're going to go after offensive boards hard.

"We paid special attention to that and tried to take away their transition baskets. We did a horrible job of that in the first half, but did much better in the second half. They just beat us on the offensive boards."

Taylor actually pointed toward a sense of urgency for his team's increased defensive intensity in the second half.

"We knew we had to speed the game up," he explained. "We went on a 6-0 game to end the half and the intensity rose and we took a lot more chances.

"We did a lot more trapping, but when you come within two points you have to be able to take the lead and keep it. We'd get the lead and give it right back."

Eastmoor's Ronald Steward put aside a quiet first half and had a breakout third quarter, scoring 13 of his 20 points in just over a minute of play, but it wasn't enough.

"That's why he's the district player of the year," Taylor said of Steward. "He led us this year and he's so fast with the ball. He's so intelligent with it.

"He got a little out of it toward the end. We got down and he tried to rush it a little bit, but he does it all for us. I wish he would've shot some more shots because he's just a complete player."

DeSales plays Dresden Tri-Valley (22-1) in the regional semifinal at Ohio University's Convocation Center Thursday (6:15 p.m.).

Stallions ride Hobbs' defense, Nick Kellogg's offense to victory

Thursday, March 15, 2007
by JEREMY STEWART
ThisWeek Staff Writer

The first time 7-foot-1 center Sean Hobbs of the DeSales High School boys basketball team touched the ball last Friday in a Division II district final, he was in the post and he tried to pass the ball to the perimeter but sent it sailing over everyone into the backcourt and out of bounds.

Hobbs' offense wasn't clicking, but his defense made the difference, leading to the Stallions' second consecutive district championship with a 61-55 win over Eastmoor Academy in in the Fairgrounds Coliseum.

"Sean was pivotal on the defensive end," coach Blair Albright said. "He was changing shots and rebounding the ball."

Hobbs blocked four shots in the final two minutes to keep Eastmoor from cutting into DeSales' lead. After blocking his fourth shot with 15 seconds left, Hobbs grabbed the loose ball and was fouled. He made two free throws on the ensuing possession to make the score 60-53.

The first two blocks came after a timeout by Eastmoor with 2 minutes left and DeSales leading 53-51. Hobbs blocked Eastmoor's Jaquez Terry twice in the same possession on consecutive attempts.

On the Warriors' next possession Terry was blocked again, but this time when he grabbed the rebound, Hobbs' was called for a foul. Terry made the both free throws to make the score 55-53.

Freshman guard Nick Kellogg then scored for a 57-53 lead. Kellogg gave the Stallions a boost by scoring 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, as they improved to 20-3.

Hobbs' fourth block came with DeSales leading 58-53.

He rejected Eastmoor's Antonio Bumpus, gained possession and was fouled.

"I was just like, hold on to the ball," Hobbs said. "Don't let that ball go. I was just trying to get some stops, doing the best that I can."

The Stallions played a tightly-packed zone for most of the game, which left Hobbs standing in front of the basket and kept Eastmoor's guards out of the lane.

"He's a force down there," Eastmoor coach Sean Taylor said. "We knew he was a good player. We didn't finish and we were a little tentative attacking. We knew we had to get a lead, but we couldn't get a big enough lead to get them out of that 2-3 zone."

The Warriors led briefly in the fourth quarter, 49-48. DeSales twice led by double digits. The first was after a 16-2 run spanning the first and second quarters that turned a 14-11 deficit into a 27-16 lead, which it held until less than a minute before halftime. At that time the Warriors took a timeout, then went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 27-22.

DeSales led 35-25 midway through the third when Eastmoor went on 15-4 run to take a 40-39 lead. Ron Steward scored nine consecutive points during that run which lasted 1:30.

"We were able to throw a little switch on them throughout the game and give them man and zone looks on the fly," Albright said. "I think that was key. We knew that they're the type of team that feeds off of offensive momentum. They're a tremendous offensive team. It seemed like every time I felt like we were right where we need to be, bam, they would just explode."

Steward led the Warriors with 20 points. Terry scored 13 and Bumpus had 10. For DeSales, Alex Kellogg scored 17 points and Elijah Allen added 14.

Last year the Stallions beat Centennial 64-54 to win their first district championship since 1987. The Stallions eventually lost in a state semifinal to Wooster Triway 58-56.
