DeSales rallies to clinch CCL title

Johnson leads comeback for Stallions in fourth quarter

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Those who take specific pleasure in crunching numbers enjoyed one wild night.

St. Charles produced separate runs of 15-0 and 20-3.

DeSales countered with streaks of 9-0, 13-0 and 14-0.

In the end, however, all that mattered to the home crowd was the Stallions’ teetertotter ride of a 64-58 victory that clinched the Central Catholic League championship.

"One of the types of wins we’ve been lacking this year is when we’ve gotten down and had our backs against the wall and still came back to earn the victory," DeSales coach Blair Albright said, "and tonight we had to do it at least twice.

"Sometimes you find out what you’re made of in games like this. That final push we made was the way champions respond. This wasn’t our best game by any means, but it was a character game."

DeSales (13-6, 9-0) entered the fourth quarter trailing 49-42, but a half-court trap seemed to unnerve St. Charles (13-6, 6-3).

Junior point guard Dane Johnson played a big role in the comeback with six points and three assists in five minutes when the Stallions turned a 51-44 deficit into a 58-51 lead. Johnson had 12 points and 12 assists.

"I think we just realized that it was our home court and our CCL to win and we went out and took out," he said. "St. Charles played their hearts out and we had to match their intensity.

"We tried to jack up the pressure on the defensive end and get the ball out of their hands. Ultimately, that got our offense untracked."

Albright singled out the play of Johnson and senior guard Andrew Thomas, who scored a career-high 17 points — more than 10 better than his average — and had seven rebounds.

"Dane made some absolutely pivotal plays on the defensive end in addition to what he always gives us as our leader and playmaker," Albright said. "As for Andrew, we know he is capable of that."

With Elijah Allen and Alex Kellogg, who typically account for 50 percent of DeSales’ scoring, limited to a combined 17 points, other players responded.

"Everyone in our rotation can score and we’ve proven that all year," Thomas said. "Tonight, well, this was my last game in this gym and I was extra pumped up."

Rob Gruenwald scored a career-high 31 points to pace the Cardinals, who are headed to their winningest season since 1995. He had 13 in a sizzling 20-5 third quarter.

"That sure was a game of runs between two teams that were really laying it on the line," St. Charles coach Pat Dimmick said. "I just wish the last run would have been ours instead of theirs."
