Stallions shake scrappy Bishops

Saturday, December 13, 2003

By Staff Reports

COLUMBUS -- Rosecrans would like to take back its second quarter against tall, talented, quick and deep Columbus DeSales Friday night.

The host Stallions, with five players 6-4 or better, closed the first half on an 18-4 run to build a 34-21 lead. But the much smaller Bishops didn't back down and played DeSales fairly even the other three quarters, only to drop a 79-61 Central Catholic League decision that was closer than the final score indicated.

Junior-dominated Rosecrans, playing its first game of the season to DeSales' third, got the Stallions' attention in the first quarter. Junior point guard Scott Moyer exploded for eight quick points with a pair of threes, and the Bishops took a 15-12 lead on layups by Kolby Knox and Moyer.

Jonathan Gaudio's short jumper, off an assist from Johnny Bills, still had Rosecrans up 17-16 early in the second period. But explosive DeSales (3-0), which went on a 27-0 run Tuesday against Columbus Eastmoor, limited the Bishops to two of 13 shooting with their pressure man-to-man defense.

And the Stallions' fast-breaking offense took off in the 18-4 run, with 6-6 Joe Schmall asserting himself inside with nine points while Tim Dison and Ronnie Smith buried threes. DeSales hit a sizzling nine of 15 from the field in building a 34-19 lead before Jeremy Ridgley turned an alley-oop pass into a layup to make it 34-21 at intermission.

It was a sign of things to come as Rosecrans started attacking the basket more in the second half. Ridgley scored 10 of his team-high 14 points over the final two quarters, while senior guard Adam Agin erupted for all 12 of his during that span with a trio of treys. Knox and Bills added six apiece but the Bishops just couldn't quite get over the hump against the relentless Stallions.

DeSales, shuffling in and out 11 players, looked ready to run away and hide after building a 44-25 cushion midway through the third quarter. But the Bishops stormed back to within 48-38 as Agin drilled a three from the top of the key, Knox stuck back in a rebound, and Ridgley and sophomore Joe Dalton scored on drives. Ridgley then fed Bills for a layup, then stole the ball and went coast to coast.

Jonathan Stone's three revived DeSales, however. The Stallions pushed the lead back to 66-50, but Rosecrans wouldn't go away. Agin hit a pair of threes and scored on a drive and Knox also drained a trey as the Bishops fought back within 68-59 and 70-61. They got no closer, however, and the host team dropped in nine of 12 foul shots to extend the final margin.

Schmall's 19 points and six rebounds led DeSales, which connected on an excellent 27 of 50 from the field for 54 percent including eight of 20 on threes. They were a solid 17 of 25 from the stripe including 14 of 17 down the stretch.

Dison, a 6-4 senior, hit seven of 10 freebies and added 14 for the well-balanced winners, who also got 12 points and two threes from Smith, an All-CCL guard, and nine points in the second half by Rob Adams who nailed eight threes against Worthington Christian.

The scrappy Bishops battled to a 31-24 margin on the backboards over much taller DeSales, but were plagued by 21 turnovers compared to just 14 by the Stallions. The 6-3 Ridgley led the way with 14 points, eight boards and three assists, while Moyer cashed in 12 points and two threes with three assists, Agin also tallied 12 and Knox, a 6-1 junior, came off the bench for 11 points and seven rebounds.

Rosecrans hit an outstanding 15 of 24 from the floor for 63 percent over the final two quarters, finishing up 22 of 48 for 46 percent and 11 of 16 at the line for 69 percent.

DeSales dominated the night, as its reserves rolled to a 68-31 win behind Ricky Taylor's 16 points with J.B. Wolfe scoring 15 for Rosecrans. The Stallions' freshman team romped 62-19 behind Brandon Garrick's 15 points. Andy Melick notched eight for the Bishops.
