Bishops fall to DeSales 66-45

Saturday, January 18, 2003

ZANESVILLE -- A young Rosecrans team has had a lot of close calls this season.

However, Friday night wasn't one of them.

Struggling with 34 percent shooting from the field and 16 turnovers, the Bishops fell behind by 10 points early in the second quarter and never got closer as they dropped a 66-45 decision to visiting Columbus DeSales in a Central Catholic League game at Rogge Gymnasium.

The loss dropped Rosecrans to 3-8 overall and the Bishops remained winless in the CCL. The Stallions improved to 8-3 overall.

Center Joe Schmall's 15 points led DeSales, while guard LaMarr Williams added 12 points and Mike Rohrer and Charles White eight points apiece.

Benefiting from several easy baskets off its press and consistent dribble penetration, DeSales shot a solid 24 of 50 from the floor (48 percent) and held a commanding 37-20 edge on the boards. The Stallions also forced 16 Bishop turnovers.

With another game scheduled for tonight at Wheeling Central Catholic, Bishops coach Todd Rock said there's no time to sulk over a bad performance.

"Tonight was the first time all year that we really didn't play well at all," Rock said. "But the good thing about basketball compared to football is that we come right back tomorrow and play. At least we don't have to sit around for a week and think about it."

Unable to handle the Stallions' pressure, Rosecrans was forced to play a much faster tempo than it preferred.

"We definitely didn't want to run with them," Rock said.

"The first time we played, they really tried to slow it down on us and control the clock," DeSales coach Dan Garrick said. "We really didn't want them to settle into that kind of game. Our defense was really good tonight."

Garrick, in his ninth year at DeSales, said coming to Rosecrans is always one of the toughest road trips in the league.

"Honestly, I think the two toughest road trips in our league is St. Charles and coming (to Rosecrans)," Garrick said. "One thing we wanted to do was not let their crowd into the game. We wanted to get off to a quick start, which we were able to do."

Rosecrans fell behind 16-10 after one quarter and 27-19 with 2:14 left in the second. That's when the Stallions provided all of the cushion they would need, using full-court pressure to blitz Rosecrans 9-2 in the final two minutes as they led 35-20 at halftime.

The Bishops never got closer than 37-23 the rest of the game as DeSales used a 10-2 lead to start the second half and led 52-27 after three quarters. DeSales led by as many as 29 in the third quarter.

"This is a young team, and sometimes you'll have games like this," Rock said.

Brady Sharrer's 18 points paced Rosecrans, which shot just 38 percent from the field, including 5 of 20 from the line.

Rosecrans lost the reserve game 56-44, while the freshmen won 41-28.
