DeSales surges past Rosecrans to 66-46 win

Saturday, December 7, 2002

TR Staff Reports

COLUMBUS -- For nearly three quarters, Rosecrans hung tough with Columbus DeSales. But a 15-0 run midway through the second half enabled the host Stallions to pull away for the 66-46 Central Catholic League victory.

DeSales (1-0 CCL, 2-0 overall) connected on 11 of 25 three-pointers (44 percent) in handing the Bishops a season-opening loss. Josh Murray led the way with 16 points, including four trifectas, while Ronnie Smith hit a trio of treys in his 11 and LaMarr Williams a three in his 10 points.

Jimmy Baker's 14 points paced Rosecrans, which seriously challenged the Stallions for most of the game.

Rosecrans trailed 33-25 at halftime and 35-25 at the start of the third, but when Scott Moyer sank a triple with nearly a minute left in the quarter, the Bishops were only down 40-36.

Then DeSales kicked it into high gear. Tim Dison's two-pointer, a Smith stickback of Sam Seggerson's steal and missed layup, then a Smith three-pointer as the third quarter buzzer sounded had the Stallions out front 47-36.

Murray went for the jugular in the fourth, nailing two three-pointers to start the period. When Michael Rohrer scored a basket, the run was 15-0 and the DeSales lead had ballooned to 55-36.

DeSales was 5 of 7 on three-pointers in the fourth as Rob Adams hit two of DeSales' three threes in the final three minutes.

Rosecrans quickly shot out to a 7-0 lead as Baker hit a three and Matt Joseph and Moyer collected baskets.

With Rosecrans ahead 9-3 on a Jeremy Ridgley basket, Williams and Murray each knocked down a trey in tying the contest at 9-9. The see-saw action saw Jonathan Gaudio score on an offensive rebound in the final minute as the Bishops led 15-14 entering the second.

DeSales battled to a 29-22 lead late in the second quarter, but Joseph's three-pointer brought Rosecrans to within 29-25. Yet DeSales scored the last four points in entering halftime ahead 33-25.

DeSales was 25 of 51 for a steady 49 percent, while making 5 of 9 free throws for 56 percent. The Stallions led 34-32 in rebounding and had 14 turnovers to Rosecrans' nine.

Brady Sharrer grabbed 11 boards for Rosecrans, which made 17 of 57 field goals for 30 percent, including 4 of 20 from three-point range (20 percent). The Bishops also shot 8 of 14 at the foul stripe for 57 percent.

DeSales won the reserve game 62-48 and the freshmen contest 63-19. No other information was provided on either game.
