DeSales boys hold off frantic Kilbourne rally

Wednesday, January 23, 2002

By Bradley Eimer
Northland News Sports Reporter

With 1:47 remaining in the fourth quarter in a boy's basketball matchup between DeSales and visiting Worthington Kilbourne Saturday, the Wolves had rallied from a 17-point deficit to claim their first lead of the game at 62-61.

Granted it was only a one-point lead. But it was on the road in hostile territory against the defending Central Catholic League champions.

Yet, thanks to DeSales' stingy full-court press and some key defensive rebounds, the Wolves saw victory slip through their hands as they fell to the Stallions 66-62.

"We're pleased with the win and things are looking better than the beginning of the year," DeSales coach Dan Garrick said. "We have much better chemistry and have solidified our approach as to whom is starting and who is coming off the bench and the kids are responding well to that."

With the help of perimeter shooters Josh Murray, Charles White and Mike Rohrer, the Stallions cruised to a 25-8 lead headed into the second period.

"The first half we played very well and, although I didn't think we played great offensively, we shot 53 percent and our shots were simply going in," Garrick said. "On the flip side, we had 15 turnovers in the first half and we were just not pressuring as well as we could have."

Kilbourne's Andy Barton and A. J. Gafford orchestrated a rally to cut the lead to 13 with less than four minutes remaining in the half.

But the offensive and defensive inside play of David Shelby, Rohrer, Scott Wintering and Ryan Senser (particularly at the foul line) boosted the Stallions to a 43-26 lead headed into the locker room.

"Our inside game has been doing well all year long," Wintering said. "We can rely on the perimeter guys to feed us the ball while we have confidence in them to do a great job on the outside as well."

In the third period, with the help of steady shooting, the Wolves slowly nipped away at the DeSales lead, closing to 11 points by the fourth period.

Thanks to Stallions' missed shots and turnovers, the Wolves made their move. With the help of Burke Coleman, Gafford and Barton, Kilbourne rallied and took the lead with a free throw by Drew Maurer at the 1:47 mark.

"Kilbourne is a half-court based team and that slowed down the game some for them," Wintering said. "I don't think we were in a lull or anything like that. I just think after we took the lead we kind of didn't push it which was probably not the right thing to do."

DeSales' LaMarr Williams then scored two against a Kilbourne full-court press. After the Wolves' Drew Lacey missed a three-pointer on the other end, the Stallions went ahead by two with a Williams free throw.

With 14.8 seconds left to play, Gafford missed a two-pointer with Barton fouled while getting the offensive rebound with 3.9 seconds left.

Barton missed his first shot and Shelby took the rebound as well as Scott Wolever's foul and sank the final two points of the night for the Stallions' win.

"When they made a run in the second half, I think we showed great decision making," Garrick said. "I think our up-tempo game affected them a little bit because they only shot 38 percent from the floor."

For the Stallions (5-6, 3-3 CCL), Shelby had 15 points followed by Rohrer with 12, Greg Pharion and Williams with nine each. Murray and Wintering scored six each and White five.

For the Wolves (3-9, 2-4 OCC Central), Barton had 16 points followed by Gafford with 15, Burke Coleman with seven, Wolever six and Ben Woerth five.

The Stallions, who lost to West 84-73 on Jan. 15, were scheduled to take on Rosecrans Tuesday, Watterson at home Friday (8 p.m.) and visit Teays Valley Saturday (8 p.m.). The Wolves, who lost an OCC matchup on the road to Westerville South 66-58 Friday, were scheduled to take on Westland Tuesday and Dublin Coffman on the road Friday (7:30 p.m.).

****

Saturday's win over Worthington Kilbourne boosted Garrick's overall record to 84-60 which surpasses current Dublin Scioto coach Tony Bisutti as the winningest coach in DeSales boys basketball history.

"You know I've been blessed with great kids and a great coaching staff who are some of the hardest working and dedicated people I know," Garrick said. "And with those two things combined together make us very fortunate to be successful."
