Week 1

Session 1 - Thursday,  September 23

Topics:  Overview of the course, overview of management activities, a conceptual framework for managerial accounting, review of the modeling of total cost behavior, and creating graphs in Excel

Read:   Chapter 1 of HDF (your text) and PowerPoint slides.

Prepare:  Chapter 1, exercise 18 (5 points) and chapter 1, exercise 19 (5 points) for collection and grading

Class activities:  Review information about the course, lecture and discussion of today's topics, and collection of assignments.

Review:  There are 212 PowerPoint slides available for review purposes.


Week 2

Session 2 - Tuesday, September 28

Topics:  Modeling cost behavior

Read:  Pp. 30-38, and 323-39 of HDF (your text), Go Trailer Company and PowerPoint slides

Prepare:  Assignments  Familiar Dairy Company and exercise 2-21 [use Excel to create the graph (chart) for requirement 2]

Class activities:  Preview of Go Trailer Company, modeling of step-fixed and segmented linear costs, preview of Igo Trailer Company, review behavior of unit costs, discussion of flexible budgeting, and discussion of the assigned problems.

Practice Problem:   Fitch Cycle Co. (with solution)

Wednesday, September 29:  Submit Go Trailer Company problem by 9:00 AM on  (see assignments page for details)

Session 3 - Thursday, September 30

Topics:  Flexible budgeting, activity analysis & modeling, and budgeted activity cost rates (BACRs)

Read:  HDF chapter 4, pp. 216 - 9; notes on Flexible Budgeting and Budgeted Activity Cost Rates; and PowerPoint slides

Prepare:   Jones Electronics Co.  and HDF exercises 2-25 and 2-33.

Class activities:  Discussion of Go and Igo Trailer Company assignments, Jones Electronics Co., and exercises 2-33 and 2-25

Week 3

Session 4 - Tuesday,  October 5

Topics:  Costing of acivities, jobs, products and services

Read:  Chapters 4 & 5, and PowerPoint slides

Prepare:   Kareem's (solution), HDF exercises 4-24 and 4-25

Class activities:  Preview Yougo and Wego problems and discussion of job-order costing (Kareem's and HDF exercises 4 - 24 and 4 - 25)

Session 5 - Thursday, October 7

Topics:  Conditions under which increasing the number of cost pools is apt to be cost-effective, job-order costing, process costing

Read:  HDF chapter 5, the illustration and PowerPoint slides

Prepare:   Nestec Company (be prepared to discuss in class), Cassady Corporation, and exercise 4 - 28

Class activities:  Discussion of the conditions under which ABC is apt to make a difference, Nestec Company, HDF 4-28, and discussion of Cassady Corporation.

Week 4

Session 6 - Tuesday, October 12

Topics:  Basic process costing (ABC)

Read:  HDF chapter 17, Excel template, and PowerPoint slides

Prepare:   Spurrier Corporation, exercises 17-18, 17-19 & 20, and 27.

Class activities:   Provide feedback on Wego Trailer Company, lecture on process costing, discuss the role of ABC in process costing, present template for process costing, and go over the assigned problems.

Session 7 - Thursday, October 14

Topics:  Process costing algorithm including spoilage and shrinkage

Read:   HDF chapter 18 (weighted-average method only) and PowerPoint slides

Prepare:  Prepare exercise 5 - 26 (Idaho Potatoes) and exercises 18 - 21  and 18 - 17 & 18

Class activities:  Review HDF exercise 5-26 in general, and demonstrate use of an Excel worksheet for process costing computations for exercises 17 - 18, 19 and 20, and 27 (see homework template from WebCT)

Class activities:  Discussion of standard ABC costing followed by a lecture on the allocation of joint costs to products
