PhD in Business Policy and Strategy

The educational experience in a doctorial program is unlike any other educational experience at the university. In most undergraduate programs, and many masters degree programs, the primary challenge facing students is to understand, summarize and apply ideas, theories and concepts developed by others. In Ph.D. programs, the primary challenge facing students is to learn how to develop new ideas, theories and concepts. Where other kinds of programs focus primarily on understanding the research literature, a Ph.D. program focuses on understanding that literature in order to make contributions to it.

This type of training puts unusual demands on Ph.D. students. For example, Ph.D. training focuses not only on what research has been done in a topic area, but more importantly, on what research still needs to be done on that topic. Ph.D. training not only focuses on how well a piece of research has been done, it also focuses on how that research could be improved. Ph.D. training focuses less on memorizing facts, dates and names and more on learning a new way of thinking about the world.

The faculty at the Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University, understands the importance of training high quality Ph.D. students. Not only does this training help ensure the progress of each of the research disciplines included in the College, it also pays a vital role in creating and maintaining the intellectual energy and enthusiasm that is at the heart of the academic experience. This is why so many of the faculty at the Fisher College of Business are committed to excellent Ph.D. training at Ohio State and why Ph.D. students who have received their training at the Fisher College have been able to compete for faculty positions at some of the best research institutions in the world.
