Undergraduate Research Options
Degree with Distinction: An opportunity for seniors with serious academic research interests to pursue a traditional format year-long research project with a faculty advisor culminating in a major paper and oral defense. Distinction candidates are strongly encouraged to present their findings at the annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum .
Independent Study: Students interested in pursuing an academic topic not covered in a regularly offered course may approach a faculty member about doing an independent study. Directed study is typically jointly designed by the student and the faculty member. Students register for 693 (graded S/U) generally for 3-4 hours of elective credit. The Faculty Experts Guide can provide information on faculty areas of expertise to assist you in identifying faculty with expertise in your area of interest.
Honors Courses with Research Projects: Certain honors courses have research projects embedded in them by design. Examples are Bus Adm H499, Bus M&L H650, and Bus Adm H698. Honors courses are generally limited to students participating in one of Fisher's Undergraduate Honors Programs.
Case Competitions: Each year, Fisher’s Undergraduate Program fields several teams (usually of four students each) to participate in national or international case competitions. Fisher's Center for International Business Education and Research hosts the CIBER Case Challenge locally each year. Other recent case competitions in which undergraduate business students have participated include the Marshall International Case Competition at the University of Southern California (first place) and the Transportation and Logistics Case Competition in Denver (second place).
Business Plan Competitions: Similar to case competitions, Fisher also fields several teams of students each year to participate in competitions for development of new business plan proposals. Fisher's Center for Entrepreneurship hosts an annual $100,000 Business Plan Competition. Fisher also has a local chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), which won the Rookie of the Year award at the national SIFE competition in 2003 and took top honors in the 2004 national case competition .
