Fisher College of Business

Nationwide Fisher Biz Quiz National Challenge

Rules

The rules below may be subject to change and all participants will be notified should there be a change
  1. All questions will be drawn from The Wall Street Journal, including the Weekend Journal, published between September 4, 2007 and October 20, 2007.
  2. The sections of The Wall Street Journal from which questions will be drawn are:
    1. What’s News (Front Page) — includes material that appears in the inside pages for each of the excerpts in this section
    2. Stories that appear on the front page
    3. Stories that appear on the front page of Marketplace
    4. Stories that appear on the front page of Money and Investing
    5. Stories that appear on the front page of Personal Journal
    6. Stories that appear on the front page of Weekend Journal
    7. Stories that appear on the front page of Pursuits (Please note that Pursuits, which appears on Saturday, will change to Weekend Journal starting September 15. Therefore, Weekend Journal will appear on both Friday and Saturday from that date)
  3. For every story referred to in Rule #2, if the story appears on multiple pages (e.g., page A1 and A12), all the pages that the story appears in are included in the study material.
  4. The individual round will have 60 questions drawn from the front page stories of the Personal Journal section. It will consist of a paper and pencil based multiple choice quiz. All participants will be competing for individual prizes. As described in Rule #3, if a story that appears on the front page of the Personal Journal continues on multiple pages inside that edition, all pages that the story appears in are included in the study material.
  5. The first and second team rounds of the competition will have up to 40 questions each. These rounds of the competition will NOT be multiple choice. Simultaneous rounds will be held in three different rooms, and teams will be allotted to different rooms based on a lottery drawing at the beginning of the day.
  6. The moderator will verbally read each open-ended question for the first and second team rounds. Each of the team members will have a buzzer. The team that buzzes first will be given the opportunity to answer the question. If that team does not answer the question correctly, the other two teams will have a chance to buzz in. Of those two teams, the one that buzzes first will get a chance to answer the question. A team must buzz within 30 seconds. All teams will participate in the first and second rounds.
  7. The six highest scoring teams from the first and second team rounds will compete in the semifinal rounds.
  8. The three highest scoring teams from the semifinal rounds will compete in the finals. The semifinal and final rounds will consist of open-ended questions read by the moderator using the buzzer system described in rule #6 above.
  9. Cash Prizes and Certificates will be awarded to winners of the Individual Round, Semifinal Rounds and the Finals.
