Math Requirements

Math is a critical part of the BSBA curriculum. In order to apply to and succeed in the Fisher College of Business, students are required to take Math their first quarter. If you have taken your Math Placement and have your score you can use this chart to help determine which math course you will take your first quarter. At Day One, the academic advising staff can assist you with further questions.

There are two math series that we accept in the Fisher College of Business. Your math placement score (or AP credit) will determine where you will begin in the series. Some students depending on their score may have an option between the two series.

Placement Score “L” : Students have the option to begin the math sequence with Math 131 or 151. If you wish to take Math 161, H161, or H190—please consult with a Math Counselor

Placement Score “M” : Students have the option to begin the math sequence with Math 130 or 150

  • If you would like to take 131/151 you MUST receive permission from a Math Counselor

Placement Score “N” : Students will begin math sequence with Math 130 or 148

Placement Score “R” : Students will begin with Math 104

  • This will prepare students for Math 130 or 148 in the following quarters

Placement Score “S” : Students will begin with Math 050.

Placement Score “T” : Students will take Math 050

Placement Score “U” : Students must retake the placement test for a valid course code. Please refer to the Orientation Schedule for testing times during the afternoon.

A number of math placement scores give students an option between math sequences. Please note: Students are encouraged to take the higher math sequence if one or more of the following apply:

Like math
Are good at math
Have a strong math background
Are a Business Honors student
Are considering graduate study
Are considering taking coursework that requires a stronger math background such as: Actuarial Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Econometrics, or Statistics

M Pre-calculus 130 or 150 (131/151 by permission)
N College Algebra 130 or 148
R Intermediate Algebra 104
S Elementary Algebra 050
T Elementary Algebra 050


Recommended GEC Selections for First Year Students
GEC selections should be made in areas that interest you. It is important to understand that while all of the GEC areas are university requirements, you have a wide variety of selections to make within most categories. Several areas students gravitate toward in the first year are Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (which include Literature, Visual and Performing Arts, and Cultures and Ideas) and Natural Sciences.
