Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurship Minor

Prerequisites


Prerequisites vary by courses, and are included in the course information below. Students intending on the Entrepreneurship Minor should review these prerequisites carefully and plan to take them early in their academic programs. In some cases, prerequisites may overlap with GEC requirements.

Required Courses


BUS MHR 290 - Entrepreneurship
*Approved for GEC Credit (Social Sciences)
(Credits: 5, Prereq: none)

Focuses on the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in the historical evolution and the current understanding of business. Examines theoretical foundations, characteristics of entrepreneurs, and role of personal creativity in entrepreneurship.

Bus MHR 490 - New Venture Creation
(Credits: 4, Prereq: ECON 200 or AED ECON 200)

Survey course that explores the creation of new ventures in the face of risk and uncertainty. In this course, students explore business concepts related to startup and early stage ventures, including evaluation and analysis of business opportunities.

Elective Courses


The minor requires students to successfully complete at least three elective courses. It is recommended that students complete one elective from each of three content areas listed below. Regardless, students will not be permitted to count more than two courses from any one content area for credit toward the minor. In addition, students are encouraged to take at least two electives outside their major.

Creativity, Innovation, and Idea Generation
BUS M+L 490 - Entrepreneurial Marketing
(Credits: 4, Prereq: Econ and Math)

Focuses on marketing concepts and methods of entrepreneurs leading growth-oriented companies.

ISE ME 682 - Fundamentals of Product Design
(Credits: 4, Prereq: ISE 523, 561 or grad)

Takes students through the product design process, from listening to the voice of the customer to idea generation and evaluation, system level design and system architecture, design for assembly and manufacturing, and lean manufacturing.

DESIGN 797 - Interdepartmental Seminar
(Credits: 3, Prereq: Permission of instructor. Repeatable to a maximum of 20 cr hrs.)

Interdisciplinary knowledge and problems examined and discussed in the context of shared concerns.

PSYCH 662 - The Psychology of Creativity
(Credits: 3, Prereq: Psych 100 and an additional 10 cr hrs in psych)

Examines the theories, definitions, processes and measurement of personal creativity.

Market Opportunity Evaluation and New Venture Planning
AED Econ 402 - Principles of Agribusiness Marketing
(Credits: 4, Prereq: 200, H200, Econ 200, or H200)

Focuses on in-depth assessment of the marketing environment in specific food and natural resource industries and what it takes to successfully lead an entrepreneurial enterprise in these industries.

Bus FIN 590 - Entrepreneurial Finance and Private Equity
(Credits: 4, Prereq: Econ and Math)

Presents a dynamic two part process in which companies invest in both real and human capital assets and then find the financial capital necessary to pay for those investments.

Sociol 597.01 - Contemporary World Societies
(Credits: 5, Prereq: Jr or sr standing. GEC courses)

Focuses on the changing global economy, its impact on distinctive regions, and the ways nations and regions are responding to rapid globalization and economic change.

Leading and Managing High Performance Ventures
AED Econ 460 - Human Resource Management in Small Businesses
(Credits: 3, Prereq: 401 or Bus-MHR 400)

Study of characteristics of small businesses that make many of their human resource management problems unique, such as recruiting only in local labor markets in relative geographic isolation, limited alternatives for organizational structure, and irregular coverage of labor laws.

Bus MHR 590 - Leading High Performance Ventures
(Credits: 4, Prereq: AED ECON 200 or ECON 200)

Explores the key managerial practices and skills necessary to lead a successful growing business.

COMM 626 - Strategic Organizational Communication
(Credits: 5, Prereq: ?)

Explores the importance of communication within organizations, is communication in organizational settings; role of the employee and the employer as well as the relationship between the two.

Sociol 464 - Work, Employment, and Society
(Credits: 5, Prereq: 5 cr hrs in sociol)

Provides an overview of social science knowledge about organizational functioning, labor force composition, and human relations issues.

FM Res M 567 - Families in Business
(Credits: 3, Prereq: none)

Offers students the opportunity to explore family business topics, such as family dynamics, conflicts, and relationships relative to the business, formation and growth, strategic management, professionalization, and succession planning.

Bus-MGT 494 - Foundations of Operations for Entrepreneurs
(Credits: 4)

Additional Requirements


  1. No grade below a C- will be permitted in courses comprising the minor; the minimum overall CPHR of the minor shall be 2.00.
  2. If elective credits total 10 or fewer, students must take an additional class to meet the 20 credit requirement.
  3. Courses completed for the minor may not count toward a particular major. Please see your advisor for specific implications.
  4. No more than 10 hours of transfer credit may be applied to the minor.
  5. Variations in the program are generally not permitted; any variation must be approved by the academic director of the Center for Entrepreneurship in the Fisher College of Business.
  6. A student who completes the minor following the above guidelines need only their college's Minor Program Form with their college office. No approval from the Fisher College of Business is required.
