What is the Dean's Leadership Conference?

The Dean’s Leadership Conference (DLC) is a day-long event that is planned and implemented entirely by students. The purpose of the event is to bring together high-performing undergraduate students from the Fisher College of Business and leaders from the business community in Columbus and beyond so they have the chance to meet and interact with each other, and have fun!

Testimonials

From Provost Joseph Alutto, formerly Dean of the Fisher College of Business

"The Dean’s Leadership Conference is an annual event that impacts our students, faculty and programs in a number of positive and far-reaching ways. The excitement of watching students grapple with new ideas and challenge existing assumptions is always inspiring. But just as important are the contributions to program evolution that are made by participants in the Leadership Conference.

For example, last year the group noted that the college needed to do more to make visible the quality of our student body, and that has certainly been reflected in the efforts of our college public communications group and can be seen in the stories highlighted in Fisher Ink. Similarly, last year’s participants noted that we did not do a very effective job of recruiting our own outstanding graduates to our various graduate programs, and this past year we have greatly expanded such efforts. It was also noted that more could be done to expand our entrepreneurship offerings, and this year the college launched a new entrepreneurship program that is available to any university undergraduate. Finally, conference participants suggested that the college increase the visibility of Fisher undergraduates actively involved in research. One outcome of this has been college support for undergraduate projects entered in the university’s Denman Competition and that has resulted in a number of awards being won by Fisher students.

The point is simply that while the focus of the Dean’s Leadership Conference is on enhancing the development of outstanding students, those students in turn contribute back to the college in a variety of ways that make us stronger and the program more valuable to each entering class. That willingness to give back as well as constantly seek personal attainment is a value commitment that makes all of us very proud of our connection to the Fisher College."

From Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Rao Unnava

"It was a pleasure to be in the same room as several current business leaders, and many potential future leaders. The exchange of ideas was stimulating, and listening to some of the best students from Fisher expressing their thoughts about various issues of relevance to our college was a terrific learning experience."

What have the previous DLC's been like?

The 2007 Dean’s Leadership Conference was chaired by Luba Osadchy. Luba and her team titled their event “Business without Borders”. The agenda for DLC 2007 included an interactive networking activity, a keynote speaker, and a case study. The keynote was graciously delivered by Ms. Stacy Methvin, C.E.O. of Shell Chemicals. The case study involved choosing how to route an oil pipeline through several fictitious countries. The case study was incredibly detailed and very challenging, yet the students did an outstanding job tackling all the material and providing well-justified recommendations to the judges.

The 2006 Dean’s Leadership Conference was chaired by Tim Paridon. Tim and his team titled their event “A Day with the Deans,” because Dean Joseph A. Alutto delivered an excellent keynote speech. Tim and his team also planned a panel discussion with several of the Deans of the Fisher College of Business and business professionals from the Columbus community. The students completed a case study revolving around a strategic plan for the future of the Fisher College of Business, and presented their suggestions on the day of the conference. Everyone was impressed with the quality of the undergraduate students!
