Dean's Leadership Conference

What is the Dean’s Leadership Conference?
The Dean’s Leadership Conference (DLC) is a daylong event that brings together high performing undergraduates and faculty from the Fisher College of Business as well as local leaders from the business community. The DLC combines introspective leadership development with collaboration and communication while fostering interaction amongst students and business leaders.

What is the agenda for the DLC?
The 2009 event is titled "Initiate. Innovate. Inspire: Leadership through Entrepreneurship.” Students will be placed in groups and will work together to develop their ideas. An effective group will utilize patient thought and innovative insight to create a sound plan for their assignment. The entrepreneurial assignments given to each group will relate to start-up inventions or nonprofit organizations.

As a complement to their assignment, one student from each group will have the unique opportunity to introduce their plan to prospective investors with an “elevator pitch.” As a unit, student groups will then present their assignment to their peers in a boardroom setting. The boardroom setting grants students the realistic entrepreneurial experience of "selling" your idea to investors.

The conference will also weave in interactive networking events that will take place throughout the day. The events will allow students and business representatives to connect on a professional and social level.

The agenda is as follows:

Time Event
8:00-8:30 Full breakfast
8:30-11:15 Welcome Speeches / Team Elevator Pitch / Entrepreneurial panel
11:15-11:30 Break
11:30-1:00 Networking Activity and Lunch
1:00-2:30 Friends, Family, & Fools Team Work time
2:30-3:45 Boardroom
3:45-4:00 Break
4:00-4:30 Awards / Wrap Up

When will the DLC be held?
Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 8:00am - 4:30pm.

The 2007 Dean’s Leadership Conference was chaired by Luba Osadchy. Luba and her team titled the event “Business without Borders.” The agenda for the 2007 event included a networking activity, a keynote speaker, and a case study. Ms. Stacy Methvin, C.E.O. of Shell Chemicals, delivered the keynote. The case study involved choosing how to route an oil pipeline through several fictitious countries. The case study was detailed and very challenging, yet the students did an outstanding job tackling all the material.
