Accounting Careers Awareness ProgramACAP-OHIO is an innovative career development program designed specifically for minority high school students. This fully-supervised, weeklong summer residency program was developed to give minority students an opportunity to explore careers in accounting and business. During their stay on campus, students attend a variety of business and college preparatory workshops and are introduced to topics such as accounting, finance, economics, computer technology, and business management. ACAP is sponsored by the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), and the Ohio Society of CPA's in conjunction with the Fisher College of Business, which has hosted the program for the past sixteen years. Students selected for ACAP-Ohio will receive free tuition, room and board, books, materials, tours and mentoring associated with the program funded by prominent regional and national corporations. Candidates for ACAP-Ohio must complete an application, obtain one personal reference, write a 200-word essay and submit official transcripts. Students may also apply online at ACAP-Ohio. The deadline for submission of application materials is April 6. The ACAP-Ohio Selection Committee will review applications and essays. Students accepted into the program will be notified by May 4, 2011. The next ACAP program is scheduled for June 17-22, 2012. ACAP has successfully impacted program participants, who overwhelmingly choose to pursue business and accounting majors upon entering college. A 1999 survey of past participants revealed that 43% of respondents have chosen college majors in accounting and 20% plan to major in business or finance.
