Web Spaces

Access and Maintenance

IT Services offers web space for a variety of purposes to faculty, staff, and students of the Fisher College of Business. Faculty and staff personal content is accessible from fisher.osu.edu/~name_#. Student content is accessible from student.cob.ohio-state.edu/~name_# -- see the Student Web Space page for more details.

To add or update content in your web space, you must connect to the appropriate webserver using a Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) program. SFTP programs require a Host Name/Address, User ID, and Password from the user. Please refer to the list below as a guide when connecting via SFTP to use your web space.

Host Name:
Students' personal web space - student.cob.ohio-state.edu
Student group web space - groups.cob.ohio-state.edu
All official FCOB material (posted by faculty and staff) - fisher.osu.edu
User ID:
username_# (your FCOB username)
Password:
Your FCOB password

You can access the student webspace in any of the lab computers or at home by using the SSH Secure File Transfer Client (available from the OSU site licensed software page), as instructed below:

  1. Launch the SSH Client by clicking its icon, located in the start menu under: START -> All Programs -> Internet Applications -> SSH
  2. Click on the Quick Connect button on the top-left corner of the program.
  3. Enter your login information as shown, replacing username_# with your FCOB username. After pressing connect, you will be asked to enter your FCOB account password.

Once you are connected to the webserver, you will see any files listed in your 'home directory'. This is your personal space on the web server, but files you place here will not appear publically via the web. Where to place content for access from the web varies depending on purpose:

Personal Web Space

Within your home directory is a folder named 'www'. This is your 'web directory.' Any HTML pages, documents, images, etc. placed in this folder will be publically accessible via the internet.

Student Group Web Space

Group leaders still maintaining a site through SFTP will find a link in their home directory - similar to the 'www' link pictured above - to the group's web space. Please keep in mind that the college provides student organizations with a web-based content management system that requires no knowledge of HTML and no maintaining files with SFTP; all student groups are encouraged to take advantage of this option. Visit the Student Group Websites Knowledge Base page for more information.

Official Fisher Web Space

All other static Fisher content is edited by navigating to the appropriate directory on the webserver and editing/uploading revisions. Whenever possible, ITS makes an effort to set up links in your home directory to the content you will be working with. These links appears as folders, similar to the 'www' folder pictured in the screenshot above; clicking a link in your home directory will take you directly to the linked location. If you need assistance locating, organizing, or editing static web content (in other words, anything stored directly on the server and updated by SFTP), please contact the webmaster.
