Personal Laptops

I have a personal laptop, and would like to use it to connect to the Internet while I'm on the Fisher campus. How do I connect?
Any college-affiliate with a Fisher email or lab account may access the fixed and wireless networks with a personal laptop. This includes all Fisher faculty, staff, graduate and full-time undergraduate students, and visiting scholars.

The first step in gaining access to the Fisher fixed and wireless networks is to register your personal laptop. Registration is required for both wireless and fixed network access at the Fisher College of Business. With a valid Fisher username and password, you can register your laptop with the quick online self-registration form. Laptop registration tutorials are available in the Personal Laptop Registration Knowledge Base.

Once you've received email notification from IT Services staff that your registration process is complete, your fixed network adapter requires no other configuration. If it is setup to connect via DHCP, your laptop should connect to the Fisher network when you plug in. However, wireless requires authentication and encryption; details on how to access the Fisher wireless network may be found at the Wireless Knowledge Base.

What if I need help registering or configuring my laptop?
Laptop registration tutorials are available in the Personal Laptop Registration Knowledge Base.

In addition, IT Services offers walk-in support in Mason 320 during regular business hours, 8am to 5pm. Students with significant scheduling conflicts due to class or work can contact the IT Services Helpdesk at helpdesk@fisher.osu.edu or 614-292-8976 to schedule an appointment.

Am I required to register my personal laptop in person?
No. With a valid Fisher username and password, you can register your laptop with the quick online self-registration form. Laptop registration tutorials are available in the Personal Laptop Registration Knowledge Base.

Am I still required to have all patches and updates installed prior to registration?
Although not an explicit requirement to registering, students are still strongly advised to apply all “critical” and “security” patches for their laptop operating system on a regular basis. IT Services staff can help you with this or you can check out the Patching and Security Knowledge Base.
