Patching and Security

How do I patch my computer running Windows XP?
Microsoft provides patches on a regular basis (for free) for the Windows XP operating system. These patches fix flaws in operation as well as security holes within the operating system and applications running on your computer. In order for your computer to be connected to the FCOB network legitimately we require that your machine be completely up to date with all of the latest critical patches installed.

To install Windows XP operating system patches:
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click on "Tools" then "Windows Update"
- You may be prompted to install the latest Windows Update software; it is safe and necessary to do this.
- On the right-hand side, click the link that says, "Upgrade to Microsoft Update" and follow the instructions to install it.
3. Click on "Custom"
- Your system will now be scanned to assess the current patch level.
- After the analysis is complete you will see a list of patches that need to be installed. We require that you install all patches under "high priority updates".
4. Click "Go to install updates"
5. Click "Install"
6. Repeat process until there are no "high priority updates" available to install

NOTE: This process will have to be run several times with a reboot of your system required between most patches. Simply reboot your computer when prompted and run through these steps again.

How do I patch a computer running MacOS X?
Apple makes patches availible for free to all MacOS X users through the Software Update service. This service is installed on all MacOS X computers.

To install MacOS X patches:
1. Open the the apple menu
2. Pick "Software Update..."
3. Make sure all items listed as "Security Update" are selected.
4. Click on the Install items button.
5. Enter the password when prompted.
6. Read and Accept any license agreements for the patches you selected.
7. Reboot the computer if you are asked to do so.

I do not have internet access from outside the Fisher College of Business, how can I obtain critical patches?
Critical patches can be obtained using various methods.

1. You can use the FCOB computer labs to download critical/security patches and save them to personal storage media (i.e. USB memory stick). You will need to install these patches onto your personal laptop.

2. You can schedule an appointment with Information Technology Services Helpdesk and someone can assist you in installing critical patches. Please contact the helpdesk at helpdesk@fisher.osu.edu or 614-292-8976.
