Internship Success Stories
The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company
|
Briefly describe your projects.
My projects consists of working with the purchasing staff to create bids, analyze proposals, give recommendations on suppliers, and assess their performance. In a nutshell, we are the buyers who evaluate the salespeople. It is nice being on the other side for once! - Nam Huynh, Tran & Log |
What was the most important thing you learned?
The most important thing I learned from my internship is communication skills. In the classroom students hear how communication is important, but they never get an opportunity to practice and improve their skills. My internship has required me to write emails, make telephone calls, even travel with coworkers and supervisors. I was forced to learn how to communicate my ideas clearly and present myself professionally.
- Jessica Stanford, Accounting
The most important thing that I learned from my internship at The Scotts Company was that HR theory is not always the same as HR in the workplace. Textbook information is not enough; you really need real world experience too. - Matt Miller, Human Resources
How will this internship affect your future career plans?
This has been an excellent learning experience to understand how the inter-workings of an office job works. In the past I was involved with the other end of the bid spectrum when I worked with a construction company. Now I see the important aspects that go into the selection of a supplier. Also I've learned how relationships and dependability factor into decision-making.
- Sean Zustin, Transportation & Logistics and Marketing
