Internship Success Stories

Philip Morris

What advice would you give to other students seeking an internship?

Last year I went into my 4th year, knowing I would be here for a 5th, and decided I would look at an internship. It was going to be my first summer staying the USAand I thought it would be worthwhile. I must admit I got lucky to have chosen Philip Morris since after participating in their internship, I regard it highly. I could have easily chosen another company and had a completely different experience, but I took the time to actually read what the companies had to say in their internship posting on the job board (now Fisher Connect). Among all the companies hiring, I felt after reading Philip Morris' posting that they were the most honest and offered the most responsibility as well as ability to learn. Their posting wasn't a simple cut and paste description of their company, they went on to explain what would happen in the internship. So, I urge you to thoroughly read what the companies say, and if it seems too bland to you, don't go for them. If they don't even have the time to put together a decent posting, why would they go through the trouble of giving you a rewarding experience?

The most important thing I learned from my internship was how to question effectively. To perform my job I needed to gain a clear picture of what happened in each account. However, the only way I could do so was to ask questions of the retailers. I needed to know exactly what information I needed and how to solicit it in a non-confrontational way and in a way that assured each retailer that confidentiality would be maintained.
