Internship Success Story

Federal Reserve Bank

Jocelyn Mayfield

What did you do?
My major projects centered around advanced data analysis using a microdata system which is specific to The Federal Reserve System, but also with Excel. I would check data such as deposit levels of member institutions and compare those values to their previous reports, other reports they file, and to the industry. Then I would seek out and find the errors that could be attributed to variance within a set standard deviation. I also contacted the institutions with unusable data and had to coach them into correctly reporting so that we could submit the correct data to the Board of Governors, more specifically the FOMC, to use in deciding the interest rates.

What did you learn?

The most important thing that I learned at my internship is simply how to be professional and how to apply my skill set to the tasks I was given. I also was fortunate to have immense amounts of training with the Federal Reserve specific systems so that I could expand my skills. All of this while working 8-5 everyday and wearing panty hose!

What advice can you give others?

I would tell them to start early. I mean that in every sense of the word. I would tell them to get an internship as early in their academic career as possible and when interviewing and applying for interviews, to start early. I would also encourage them to utilize every resource at their disposal. Career Management is a great resource but it isn't the only one.
