Why did you choose to intern with this company?
I chose to intern at AEP because I was interested in a nontraditional position in the IT field. Many MIS majors take technical positions within firms- often working on server maintenance or 'heads down' programming. Working in the Legal IT department at AEP provided me a way to apply my course work, succeed in an IT position and learn new skills working with a subject (law) with which I had limited previous exposure.

What were your responsibilities?
My responsibilities include dealing with other energy companies in reconciling transmission invoices and power accounting, which provides me the opportunity to be the person who detects and corrects all of the energy traders' mistakes and then giving the accounts payable or receivable the ok to continue with their responsibilities. I work in the Middle office, which is exactly what it sounds like. I am the middle man, sort of, between the traders who make the money, and the accountants. In doing my job, I am on the web a lot, researching for proof of the trade. I am also on the phone with other companies trying to verify and match up data. - Chantrey Cheav, Marketing |

What was the most important thing you learned?
The most important that I learned would have to be the fact that I do not want to be an accountant of any sort. What I do now for this summer is fine and I can learn a lot, but it's definitely not the type of work I would want to be doing for any longer than a period of 3 months! - Chantrey Cheav, Marketing
Dealing with a customer whether external or internal, involves a lot of 'feelings management.' That is, managing people is crucial even if you're not in a management position per se. - Ben Weiner, MIS |
