Semester conversion background

In June 2009, the University Senate voted to adopt a new academic calendar  that will become effective in summer, 2012. Following that vote the Office of Academic Affairs established the Executive Coordinating Committee. The committee is comprised of faculty, staff, regional campuses, deans, students, and partner colleges and will meet monthly as a central forum to guide the university's transition

Fisher College of Business is committed to assuring the academic progress of our undergraduate students throughout the planning and implementation of the conversion from quarters to semesters.  We think the quality and value of our Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA) degree will be improved under the new semester curricula and that the transition will occur without increasing time to degree.

We feel that through specialized communication and advising, we will be able to prepare students for the transition to semesters.  We will begin the process by messaging to “Completers,” students who are potentially able to complete the BSBA degree under quarters before summer of 2012.

Degree Requirements and Specializations under Semesters

The Undergraduate site has been significantly updated with information to help students learn and understand the details about the switch to semesters.

Planning for Summer 2012 Internships

As a Fisher student who may be considering an internship during the shorter summer of 2012, there are some key points for you to consider as you conduct your internship search.

Visit the Office of Career Management for more information and assistance in planning your job and internship search.

Information Sessions

In order to help students with planning for graduation, we will be conducting information sessions by specialization. These sessions will include a brief presentation, followed by an opportunity to work individually with an academic advisor to plan for graduation.

At this time, students graduating during specific terms are being contacted via email.

Advising and Transitional Academic Plans (TAP)

Students will vary considerably in their academic progress, and each student’s plan for completing degree requirements will need to be determined individually. This means that students and their advisors must work together to develop effective plans leading to timely graduation as the university converts to semesters.

There are many benefits associated with the new academic calendar that will affect employers and Fisher students, such as earlier fall recruiting opportunities and student availability consistent with many internship programs designed for semesters.

Information Systems Transition

Fisher's Information Technology Services (ITS) team will be scheduling sessions with Fisher departments to evaluate any information systems that may be impacted by the transition to semester data. If you would like more information about these sessions, please email helpdesk@fisher.osu.edu.

Course Conversion Guide

The Office of the CIO and the Office of the Registrar have worked together to develop a course conversion guide.  The online course conversion guide allows students, advisors, faculty and OSU web visitors to search both current quarter and future semester course offerings and discover their associations.

Users will be able to search the conversion guide by subject, course number, title and other attributes (i.e., General Education, Honors) to obtain information about equivalent, transitional and new courses, and converted sequences.

Guide for 7-week session dates and exams

Autumn and Spring Semesters (as well as the Summer Term and Summer Session) will have designated final examination days built into the calendar.  Intra-semester 7-week sessions for the second half of each semester will be expected to use the same regularly scheduled exam days as the full 14-week semester courses.

For 7-week sessions scheduled for the first half of the regular semesters, however, there are no discrete, additional exam days set aside.  The University Senate Committee on Enrollment and Student Progress (CESP) is therefore recommending the following guidelines for instructors:

For a final at the end of the First Session in either Autumn Semester or Spring Semester, please consider one of the following:
  • An examination during the regularly scheduled class on the last day of that class for the session, but allowing for at least one “reading” day between the last day of instruction and the examination.
  • An evening examination on the last scheduled class day, or soon thereafter, but allowing for at least one “reading” day between the last day of instruction and the examination.  Scheduling arrangements would need to be made in advance through the Office of the University Registrar.”
