Students are paving Ohio State’s way on the road from excellence to eminence and one Fisher student is in a lead role in that effort.

Fisher freshman Cassie Fowler was elected president of the inaugural class of Ohio State’s Eminence Fellows, a program developed to cultivate intellectually and socially engaged graduates who are committed to solving the world’s big problems.

Her selection as an Eminence Fellow has made a real difference in her life because of the full-scholarship and eight semesters of books and stipends.

“I was paying for college on my own and even with all my scholarships, it still wasn’t enough,” she said. “I cried for three days straight when I found out I was selected.”

The fellows are already making a difference both at Ohio State and in the community, Fowler said.

They are doing work with artisans at Global Galleries, a Columbus Fair Trade retailer dedicated to selling handcrafted programs while developing cultural enrichment, educational and social events. The fellows will also be launching a mentorship programs for advanced placement students at Linden-McKinley High School.

“Our goal as the founding class is to create a legacy,” said Fowler, who is not at all intimidated by the challenge. “I’m excited by it. We are a very diverse group with different talents. Through helping the community and getting involved, we are developing bonds that I think will form into lasting relationships.”

“I came to my dream school,” Fowler said.  A Pittsburgh-native who is currently majoring in marketing, she said Ohio State and Fisher were her first choice and her educational experiences are already exceeding her expectations.

“I love all the active, hands on learning experiences I already have had so far,” she said.
