MBA Graduation Ceremony
Daniel H. Rosenthal, representative of the Office of the Chairman at NetJets Inc., will be the keynote speaker for Fisher’s 2008 MBA Graduation Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on June 7 at the Mershon Auditorium.

Rosenthal’s responsibilities include directing strategic initiatives across NetJets’ global operating units, oversight of day-to-day operations and labor relations. Prior to joining NetJets in 2005, Rosenthal practiced law at Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington D.C. He earned his bachelor degree in history and international studies from Yale University and holds a juris doctorate from the Duke University School of Law.
Rosenthal is currently leading the company's expansion in Ohio and the recently announced expansion of the company’s headquarters at Port Columbus International Airport. Signature projects include the creation of a world-class $200 million campus aimed at attracting the best and brightest employees as well as a leading role in establishing a business aviation development cluster at Port Columbus.
Commencement activities for the Master of Accounting (MAcc) and Master of Labor and Human Resources (MLHR) programs will held on Friday, June 6 at the Blackwell Inn. MBLE students tackle storage
capacity dilemma at DSW
Some students erroneously believe they must wait for summer internships to apply classroom studies to real world experiences. However, there are several Fisher courses, such as the Field Problems in Logistics, which provide classroom lessons and professional practicum simultaneously.
Jon Szekely, engineering manager for DSW, worked with students in Fisher's Master in Business Logistics Engineering program to help solve a storage and capacity issue at the company's main distribution center.
Offered as an elective for the MBA and the Master in Business Logistics Engineering (MBLE) programs, Field Problems in Logistics is an advanced project course where teams of students work together to solve a logistics-related problem at a company.
Several large companies, both locally and from across the country, enthusiastically welcome the opportunity to have Fisher students address internal business problems. Footwear retailer, DSW, Inc., has provided projects for the logistics class for the last two years. This year, managers at Columbus-based DSW were thrilled to have Fisher logistics students tackle a storage and capacity issue at its main distribution center near the airport.
“It’s free labor,” quipped Jon Szekely, engineering manager for DSW. NanoMed wins Deloitte Business
A team of Ohio State students developing a device used to genetically modify cells and enable the rapid prototyping of new gene therapies took first place honors in the 2008 Deloitte Business Plan Competition hosted by the Center for Entrepreneurship.
The team, NanoMed, included Mihaela Jekic, a biomedical engineering PhD student, Bruce Caldwell, a student in the MBA for Working Professionals program, Eric Cochran, a physics PhD student, and Aaron Sander, a graduate physics student. They presented a business plan for the Zip-Disk Gene Delivery System, a device that could potentially help researchers create cures for cancer, autoimmune diseases and other debilitating disorders.
Last month the team was one of three finalists at the 2008 Materials Research Society (MRS) Entrepreneurship Challenge, one of the nation’s most prestigious technology business start-up competitions.
The Zip-Disc Gene Delivery System, developed by bioengineering researchers at Ohio State, will be initially marketed to cell research laboratories to enable rapid prototyping of cells. The technology dramatically reduces the waiting period to produce test results from three months to three days. Ernst & Young director stresses diversity and inclusion as keys to success
Having a diverse workforce is not enough for businesses to compete in the global marketplace, said Allen A. Boston, partner and director of campus and minority recruiting for Ernst & Young.

While bringing individuals with different backgrounds into organizations is important, Boston stressed that corporations must emphasize inclusion, which means actively engaging all employees. Boston gave the keynote address at the seventh annual Fisher Diversity Awards held on May 27 at the Blackwell Inn.
Boston said corporations that can successfully link diversity and inclusion can create a productive workforce that will ultimately benefit the entire organization. For example, Ernst & Young offers a mentoring program to support employees who have not been traditionally part of the fabric of the organization, he said.
“We strive to engage in ways that employees can bring their absolute best to the forefront everyday and contribute to our organization’s success and contribute to their overall development,” said Boston, who will retire next month after 36 years with the firm. Read More »

Accounting department becomes member
of Deloitte-sponsored consortium
Fisher’s Department of Accounting and MIS has become a member of Deloitte’s International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) University Consortium. Through Deloitte’s IFRS University Consortium, Deloitte will contribute resources to Fisher to assist the program in developing IFRS curricula.
The announcement was made on May 16 at the Deloitte/Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA) Faculty Consortium meeting in Chicago, a curriculum development program for accounting educators that is sponsored annually by the Deloitte Foundation, the not-for-profit arm of Deloitte LLP.
IFRS is a single set of accounting principles that is more focused on objectives and principles and less reliant on detailed rules than U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). With more than 100 countries and approximately 40 percent of the Global Fortune 500 already using IFRS, and with the Securities and Exchange Commission expected to push for allowing U.S. multinationals the ability to use IFRS by 2011, this will be an important challenge for both the accounting profession and colleges.
Richard Dietrich, professor and chair of the Department of Accounting & MIS, said: “The rapid adoption of IFRS throughout the world simultaneously creates opportunities and challenges for accounting students and faculty members. Deloitte’s accounting professionals are helping us to develop curriculum materials so that our students will be well-prepared as they begin their careers.”
Deloitte’s contributions include drafting course materials such as classroom guides and case studies and providing Deloitte professionals as lecturers. The classroom guides and course materials will be made available to other interested universities.
The Deloitte IFRS Consortium, through its intellectual and financial support, hopes to accelerate integration of IFRS into college curricula. Participating schools benefit by having input in the direction, goals and resources available from the consortium; participation in periodic webcasts; sharing of best practices used in the classroom; involvement in the development of materials; and access to the support and guidance from Deloitte professionals, as well as to Deloitte IFRS information resources, publications and training sessions.
D.J. Gannon, partner and leader of Deloitte’s IFRS Center of Excellence in the U.S., said, “At Deloitte, we recognize our responsibility to step forward and help academia educate and prepare tomorrow’s accounting professionals to apply this new language of accounting and financial reporting.”

Marketing students help OSU place third in national hybrid vehicle competition
Fisher students lent their marketing expertise to College of Engineering students who began a project four years ago for a national hybrid vehicle competition, the Challenge X, completed in Washington, D.C. last week.
Michael Shewmon and Katie Appelt conducted focus groups and lent other marketing expertise to help propel the fuel efficient Chevy Equinox, “The Ohio State Reverb” and its team to a third-place finish. Marketing the environmentally friendly vehicle and making it attractive to consumers were significant requirements in the competition.
Initially, Curtis Haugtvedt, associate professor of marketing, advised the team on marketing strategy. Last year, he turned the job over to Fisher students Shewmon and Appelt. “The students took the ball and ran with it,” Haugtvedt said. “They did a terrific job. “
A national four-year competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, Challenge X engages engineering students to offer solutions to improve the energy efficiency of cars. Students in the College of Engineering have spent the past four years designing energy-efficient ways to improve the car, replacing the standard engine and transmission with a GM 1.9-liter turbo diesel and a six-speed automatic transmission.

president of SMS
Jay Barney, professor of management and human resources, was recently elected president of the Strategic Management Society (SMS). Barney has served on the society’s board of directors since 2006 and was recently selected as a SMS fellow. He will start a two-year term as president-elect on Nov. 1. He will then serve a two-year term as president followed by two years as past president.
As president-elect, Barney will work with interest groups of scholars and practitioners, who have joined together to study a common interest or phenomena.
The SMS consists of more than 2,000 members representing a kaleidoscope of backgrounds and perspectives from more than 50 different countries. Membership is composed of academics, business practitioners and consultants who focus on the development and dissemination of insights on the strategic management process, as well as on fostering contacts and interchange around the world.
Matta named AMA professor of the year
Shashi Matta, associate professor of marketing, was selected by students as the Marketing Professor of the Year at the Annual Banquet of the Ohio State chapter of the American Marketing Association. Recruiters from nearly 15 companies attended to network with marketing students, faculty and local professionals.
Undergrads honored for research work
Erin Lyons and Robert Arbogast each finished fourth in the Business/Social and Behavioral Sciences division at the 13th annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum held on May 14 at the Recreation and Physical Activity Center.
Lyons presented a paper on "The Implications of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act for U.S. Foreign Relations." Richard Dietrich, chair of the Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems, and Anthony Mughan, professor of political science, served as her advisors. Arbogast presented a paper on "The Influence of Religion and Social Support on Career Commitment." Steffanie Wilk, associate professor of management and human resources, served as his advisor.
Net Impact promoting sustainable practices at Fisher
Net Impact is seeking input to promote sustainable practices within Fisher. The student organization is seeking ideas related to energy efficiency, green initiatives and social and economic practices to implement within Fisher.

Cullman Fellowships awarded
Second-year MBA students Natalie P. Siston and Elizabeth Smith were awarded the W. Arthur Cullman MBA Fellowship during a luncheon on May 21. The award is presented annually to marketing majors based on their outstanding performance during their first year in the MBA program.
The fellowship is made possible by a gift from Limited Brands in honor of Cullman's 30 years supporting the business and academic communities. Son W. Arthur Cullman, Jr. and grandson Jeff Cullman were in attendance to award the fellowships.
Fisher honored for Campus Campaign giving Contributions by Fisher’s faculty and staff during the 2008 Campus Campaign was recognized with four awards during a recent ceremony. Fisher had the 10th highest level of participation among 37 university units.
Fisher was recognized for:
• Top participation among academic units with 58 percent involvement.
• Outstanding increase by an academic unit (58 percent up from 40 percent).
• Increased participation by classified civil service staff (58 percent up from 28 percent)
• Increased participation by faculty (55 percent up from 39 percent)
Faculty and staff university-wide pledged nearly $3.4 million in gifts.
Sophomores win Social Enterprise Competition Sophomores Erica Elsasser, Erin Goddard, Stephan Kuljko, Ashley Martina and Judy Sun were the winners of the Social Enterprise competition presented by the Center for Entrepreneurship as a part of the Honors Contract class.
The students presented a plan for the re-launch of Central Ohio Diabetes Association Business Line.
Liszewski wins online investing competition
UpDown.com, the social networking Web site for finance and business students, awarded Matthew Liszewski, a Fisher student, a top award in its monthly online investing contest. Liszewski earned $250 for 39.9 percent returns in April. He competed against more than 10,000 players nationwide in the monthly student investment contest.
