Wendy’s CEO Kerrii Anderson receives
Fisher’s Cullman Award

Kerrii Anderson, chief executive officer and president of Wendy’s International, was awarded the W. Arthur Cullman Award on May 24 for her promotion of business excellence through education.

Anderson was presented with the award named in honor of the late W. Arthur Cullman, a nationally recognized marketing scholar at Ohio State, during the 13th Biennial W. Arthur Cullman Symposium.

The award is given to top-level executives and corporate partners. Past recipients include, Leslie H. Wexner, chair of the Limited; Estée Lauder, chair of Estée Lauder Companies, James G. Oates, president of Leo Burnett and NetJets.

This latest recognition strengthens Anderson’s already strong ties with Fisher. In the past, she has donated her time on campus by serving on the Dean’s Advisory Council and in 2002 she received the college’s Pace Setters Executive Award. Read More »

Class of 2007: Fisher community rallies
to support father and daughter

Fisher 2007 executive MBA graduate Brian Bowers (center) with his children Kate, who will graduate from Fisher on June 10, and Robert.

One of the last conversations Brian Bowers remembers having with his wife, Danne, was expressing relief that he had successfully finished the first phase of Fisher’s rigorous executive MBA program.

At the end of Spring Break 2006, Danne had just spent the week in London with daughter, Kate, a Fisher undergraduate. As Kate and Danne were returning to the United States, Danne fell ill on the flight stricken by an undiagnosed viral heart infection. She died unexpectedly en route home to Green Bay, Wis.

Devastated, Brian, a senior vice president for transportation company Schneider National in Wisconsin, was certain he would not be able to finish out the year in the executive education program. Kate, a logistics major, was also struggling with grief over the sudden loss of her mother.

Yet, the two, together with the support of their friends, classmates, Fisher faculty and staff, an OSU counselor—but most importantly each other—forged ahead with their studies last year. Josephs honored for diversity efforts

For 30 years, Susan L. Josephs, associate dean for educational and professional diversity, has worked to make Ohio State a place that is welcoming to all people. Josephs, who is set to retire at the end of 2007, was honored for her passion and quest against injustice at the sixth annual Fisher Diversity Awards Program on May 29.

Josephs served as the keynote speaker for the event and was surprised with a new annual award unveiled in her honor. The Susan L. Josephs Award of Courage was established to honor Fisher students that emulate her strengths. The inaugural winner of the award was Marguerith Chavez, a senior majoring in human resources.

During her address, Josephs made a plea with audience members to fight against all injustices, rather than focusing solely on their own personal plight. She also said their quest to make a difference requires a deep passion to help overcome difficulty.

“I’ve felt the burn of injustice and you have to have passion,” Josephs said. “Without that passion, it becomes almost impossible to do this work because you’re called on to do the things that no one really wants to do.”

The annual award program also recognized individuals and corporations who have furthered the college’s diversity efforts.

PricewaterhouseCoppers recruiter and former Fisher MBA recruiter Christina Ballenger was honored for her individual contributions to diversity at Fisher. Procter & Gamble received the corporate award for the promotion of diversity efforts on campus.

Ballenger was honored for her role as a mentor, coach, advocate and friend of Fisher students while she was the diversity MBA recruiter in the college’s graduate programs office. Throughout her time on campus, she had been integral in implementing new diversity initiatives and diversity recruiting.

Procter & Gamble was honored for its continued support of a diverse student population through the involvement of its employees with Fisher student organizations. Employees were noted for their mentorship, discussion of issues related to minority groups and leadership training.

SIM Fund surpasses $25 million mark

Students and faculty members of the Student Investment Management program along with representatives from the university’s office of the treasurer commemorate passing the $25 million mark.

An impressive year of trading by the Student Investment Management class has once again outpaced the Wall Street traders and allowed the fund to reach another milestone. The student-managed fund, which invests a stake of Ohio State’s endowment, recently shattered the $25 million mark on the strength of a nearly $6 million gain since July.

The team of graduate and undergraduate fund managers chalked up a 28.5 percent return on their investment since the start of the fiscal year and elevated the fund from $19.9 million to $25.6 million by the end of May. They also outperformed the S&P 500 index by 10 percent over the last 11 months.

The SIM fund owns 32 stocks, its major holdings include: Microsoft, Reinsurance Group of America, Infosys Technologies, ABB Ltd. and Teva Pharmaceutical

The fund, which was started by the Ohio State’s Board of Trustees in 1990 with a $5 million seed, reached an all-time high at $26.3 million in August 2000.

This past year, the class helped strengthen the portfolio by purchasing Mastercard stock one month after the company’s initial public offering. The students purchased the stock at $47 a share last June and pulled the trigger to sell its position at $102.22 per share in March.

Capitalizing on opportunities like Mastercard is an example of the hard work each student contributes in analyzing the portfolio’s holdings as well as the rest of the market. “I think the success of the program stems from the interplay of hard-work and dedication of the students to an important mission, a rigorous and disciplined approach to investment decision making, the continued support of our department faculty, college administration and university treasurer’s office and maybe, just maybe, a little bit of luck,” said Andrew Karolyi, professor of finance and the program’s director.

Another factor in the recent success is the addition of a second adjunct professor to the class. Chris Henneforth, co-founder of Level Partners in Columbus and 2004 Fisher MBA grad, joined the program this year to teach alongside Royce West, a portfolio manager for the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio.

Pace Setter Executive Award-winner tells students to embrace diversity

Kenneth L. Coleman, chairman of software company Accelrys and Fisher alum, delivers the keynote speech at the 2007 Pace Setters Awards.

“I am an example of what is possible in this great nation of ours,” Kenneth L. Coleman, chairman of software company Accelrys, told an audience of nearly 300 at the 2007 Pace Setters Awards on May 16 at the Blackwell.

Coleman, a member of the Dean’s Advisory Committee, who earned both his bachelor’s and MBA from Ohio State, received the Pace Setter Executive Award. He was among 86 members of the Fisher community who received Pace Setter awards, including current and graduating students and faculty members.

As keynote speaker, Coleman shared an inspiring story of his quest for higher education and rise in the business world despite coming from a disadvantaged background.

“My grandfather was born a slave. Neither of my parents graduated from high school. My father was a common laborer, my mother was a maid,” Coleman told the audience. Yet, he credited their wisdom, encouragement and support for his academic and business success.

In sharing his insight on leadership and success, he noted that the key is to create a special environment where people care about the community. He encouraged students to “embrace diversity…it is an enriching experience,” he said, emphasizing that listening and understanding the viewpoints of others are an important trait in good leaders.

“There is a reason why you have two eyes, two ears and only one mouth,” he said.

Coleman was the founder and former Chairman/CEO of ITM Software, an enterprise software company focused on the Information Technology function. Previously Ken was executive vice president of global sales, service and marketing for Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI), a $2.3 billion computer systems company. He managed an organization with 4,000 employees in 37 countries. In his 14-year career at SGI, he held several key senior management positions.

Prior to joining SGI, Coleman was vice president of product development at Activision, Inc. and spent 10 years at the Hewlett-Packard Company, where he held several management positions including a two-year assignment in Europe.

Coleman also serves on the board of directors of City National Bank, MIPS Technologies, the OSU Foundation and United Online. He is the recipient of numerous honors including the Ohio State University Distinguished Service Award, the National Alliance of Black School Educators Living Legend Award, the American Leadership Forum of Silicon Valley Exemplary Leader Award, the One Hundred Black Men of Silicon Valley Lifetime Achievement Award and the Silicon Valley Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame.

Manufacturing trailblazer keynotes Women
in Operations Excellence forum

The Center for Operational Excellence (COE) welcomed back all the previous keynote speakers for the fifth annual Women in Operations Excellence forum. Toyota’s first female executive and nationally recognized automotive industry executive shared her success in overcoming barriers in the manufacturing industry as the keynote speaker for the Women in Operations Excellence forum hosted by Fisher’s Center for Operational Excellence (COE) on May 22.

Cheryl Jones, vice president of manufacturing for Toyota in Kentucky, oversees the Georgetown plant that pumps out 2,000 new vehicles daily. During her two decades with the company she became the automaker’s first woman to work on a factory floor and eventually became the first female plant manager.

The second part of the forum included a panel discussion. The COE welcomed back three former forum keynote speakers, Mary Ellen Sheets, founder of Two Men and a Truck Inc., Jan Santerre, vice president of lean enterprise for Parker Hannifin, and Donna J. Demerling, senior vice president of quality and Lean Six Sigma at Timken. They joined Jones to discuss numerous topics including the balance between a career and family, opportunities for women in manufacturing and best practices in management.

Four students receive new leadership award
Winners of the MBA program’s first annual Leadership & Professionalism Award were Matt Warnick, Natalie Siston and Jason Schroder. The awards were given out during the LDP Wrap-up Lunch on May 31.

Students, core faculty, student mentors and staff nominated students who exhibited leadership qualities and have demonstrated professionalism in and out of the classroom.

“Our leadership and professionalism awards were created to acknowledge students who stand out as leaders among a class of leaders,” said Karen Wruck, associate dean for the MBA program. “The winners are students selected by their peers as demonstrating exceptional character, integrity, willingness to take a stand for what is right and a willingness to put others before themselves.”

Award winners received a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble for the purchase of textbooks.

Greenberger named to CIO search committee
David Greenberger
, chair of the Management and Human Resources department, will serve on the search committee to find the university’s new chief information officer.

Greenberger is one 13 committee members, which is comprised of faculty and staff members, administrators, students and local business leaders.

Fisher places second in giving to Campus Campaign
Fisher faculty and staff members helped the college record the second highest participation rate in this year’s Campus Campaign.

The college placed second in percentage in giving among academic units with 201 of 425 employees pledging or 40 percent. Only the College of Biological Sciences had a higher participation rate with 49 percent.

Katie Mellett, director of corporate relations, and Rao Unnava, professor of marketing and associate dean of undergraduate programs served as the coordinators for this year’s campaign.

Joe Alutto, dean, was quoted in the May edition of Columbus Monthly about the qualities displayed by Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith during the interview process.

Alutto, who served on the search committee, told the magazine Smith displayed a clear sense of his own integrity, knew where the college sports industry was headed and had the ability to make a long-term commitment.

David Cahill, visiting assistant professor of logistics, was recently quoted by the Associated Press and Columbus Dispatch on the launch of locally-based discount airline Skybus.

Cahill was quoted on several topics including the impact of the airline on fares at Port Columbus and Skybus’ decision to fly into remote airports.

Jay Anand, associate professor of corporate strategy and international business, was quoted in a May 13 Columbus Dispatch article on the usefulness of a corporate mission statement.

Anand told the paper companies shouldn’t rely too heavily on statements because they don't give a sense of how a business competes or how it delivers value to a customer.
