Rismiller gift creates new
endowed chair in finance

A new gift to the college will establish the David A. Rismiller Chair in Finance.

David Rismiller
, an alumnus of the college who serves on the Dean's Advisory Council at Fisher, established a professorship fund in 2003. His additional commitment, which will bring his total giving to the fund over the next five years to $1.5 million, will elevate the professorship to a chair.

Rismiller is the retired chairman, president and chief executive officer of FirsTier Financial Inc., which merged with U.S. Bancorp. A 1958 graduate of the college, Rismiller has received several honors from Ohio State including the Fisher College of Business Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2000.

"My relationship with The Ohio State University has been a rewarding and fulfilling experience. Fisher College provided me with the educational tools which contributed to my success in the financial sector. I am fortunate to have the ability to repay my indebtedness to Fisher College by establishing an endowed chair," Rismiller said. "I am confident that this investment in the future of Fisher College will help maintain excellence for future generations of faculty and students."

"I greatly appreciate the steadfast commitment demonstrated by David to Fisher and his belief in our community and mission," said Dean Joe Alutto. "His support to the college comes to us not only through his generous gifts, but through his active and enthusiastic role as a trusted advisor. He is an advocate for excellence in teaching and research and an extraordinarily dedicated alumnus who is a true friend to the college."

The David A. Rismiller Professorship in Finance recognizes a distinguished faculty member with expertise in banking or a related financial service industry. The current holder of the professorship is Anil Makhija, chair of the department of finance and associate dean for executive programs at Fisher College. Makhija was appointed to the professorship in February 2005 for a five-year term.

Makhija receives alumni award
for distinguished teaching

Anil Makhija wins Distinguished Teaching award
Provost Barbara Snyder (left) and Dean Joe Alutto (center) present Anil Makhija (right), David Rismiller Professor of Finance, with the University Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.

Provost Barbara Snyder made a surprise visit to the Feb. 10 faculty meeting to present Anil Makhija, David Rismiller Professor of Finance, with the University Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching.

The award honors faculty members for superior teaching. Recipients are nominated by present and former students and colleagues and are chosen by a committee of alumni, students and faculty. The committee received approximately 1,000 nominations this year. Only 10 professors are selected for the award.

“Your students wrote that you have an amazing knack for simplifying complex concepts,” Snyder said during the presentation to Makhija. She also noted that Makhija’s students commented on his willingness to create learning opportunities in innovative ways and spend time with students outside of the classroom.

“This is a magnificent honor for Anil. A wonderful testament of great teaching and research is the impact one has on students after they leave. The ability to maintain those connections over time is a hallmark of good teaching. He is a great colleague who contributes so effectively to the college in many different ways,” Dean Joe Alutto said.

Chinese officials participate in
executive education seminar

U.S. Investment in China seminar
Shanghai attorney Mark Schaub, (left) answers a question during the “U.S. Investment in China” seminar held at Fisher, while Chen Guo Dong (right), executive director of the Jiangsu Jintan Economic Development Zone in China, looks on.

Officials from one of China’s fastest growing economic zones, Jintan City, participated in a Feb. 16 executive education seminar to educate area business officials on opportunities in the region.

The Jintan City officials were joined by international executives and lawyers and real estate experts who gave a hands-on perspective of the financial, geopolitical, strategic and operational challenges of conducting business in China. Approximately 85 managers and executives from companies such as J.P. Morgan Chase, Owens Corning, Deloitte & Touche, Moen Inc. and UPS attended the day-long seminar.

Jintan City Vice Mayor Yuan Yuedong and Chen Guo Dong, executive director of the Jiangsu Jintan Economic Development Zone, promoted the region, 145 miles northwest of Shanghai, as an emerging business center.

“It was a traditional farm city and is now a growing industrial city,” Yuedong said. “Jintan has over 100 private corporations and $280 million in exports.” The officials explained to seminar participants the 15-day process and paperwork necessary for establishing a business operation in the city.

Fisher’s Chinese business expert Oded Shenkar, the Ford Motor Company Chair in Global Management, moderated the seminar and gave opening presentations on investing in China. Shenkar urged participants to explore business opportunities in China.

“Executives have failed to realize what is going on in the world and to act on it,” Shenkar said. “Executives need to ask themselves how do you leverage, instead of being swept away by China’s rising economic power.”
