Matt Furlan

Title: VP of the Sutter Operating System

Company: Sutter Health

 Biography

Matt Furlan began his career with Texas Instruments in 1988 as a Manufacturing Engineer.  Matt went on to join the HON Company, a leading office furniture manufacturer, in 1992.  During his career at HON, Matt was challenged with increasing responsibility while receiving deep training from original Japanese sensei retired from Toyota.  He continued his practical education in lean leadership for 10 years before leaving HON in 2002 as Vice President of Operations to join Parker Aerospace as Director of Global Operations. At Parker, Matt was responsible for leading the implementation of Strategy Deployment and aligning Parker’s resources into Value Streams to achieve the company’s strategic objectives.

In 2005, Matt’s father passed away. During his father’s illness, it became evident that the delivery of healthcare is fragmented; or broken in some cases, and creates enormous emotional and financial stress for patients and their families. This experience was profound and was a major factor in Matt’s decision to transition into healthcare.

Shortly after the death of his father; and inspired to get involved in improving value delivered to patients and families, Matt accepted the position of COO for ThedaCare’s Hospital Division consisting of hospitals in Appleton and Neenah, WI. At ThedaCare, Matt learned the most rewarding role of leaders is to develop and teach all employees to take initiative for solving problems on a daily basis.

Now working for Sutter Health as the VP of the Sutter Operating System, Matt works closely with leaders to engage the hearts and minds of all Sutter employees. Matt’s goal is to strengthen Sutter’s system wide improvement effort by drawing on the ideas of all employees, thereby developing a community of problem solvers who provide the highest value for patients and long-term prosperity for Sutter Health.
