Although SCP (APA Division 23) is one the smallest divisions of the American Psychological Association, it is also one of the most active and vital divisions of APA's 51 divisions. Very few APA divisions can boast a successful flagship journal (the Journal of Consumer Psychology), a successful edited volume series (the Advertising and Consumer Psychology series), and two successful annual conferences. Several APA executives and division presidents have told me that they are very impressed by our level of productivity. Keep up the good work, and please continue to support your Society by submitting your best work to JCP, ACP, and to the Winter and Summer Annual SCP Conferences.
The Winter 1996 SCP Conference is in the capable hands of Paul Herr (University of Colorado) and John Kim (Oakland University). Paul and John are planning on inviting several distinguished social psychologists to our winter conference, which will be held in Hilton Head, South Carolina on February 2-3, 1996.
I am also pleased to announce that Dr. William Ratcliffe (President of Millward Brown International [Canada]) and Robert Kent (University of Delaware) will be co-chairing the Summer 1996 SCP Conference. Bill and Bob have agreed to help us increase industry involvement in our conferences. The Summer 1996 SCP Conference will be held at the APA Conference in Toronto on August 9-13, 1996.
Doctoral Programs of the 1990's
Over the past several years, many colleagues (especially Psychology faculty) have asked me for advice concerning where their students should apply for a Ph.D. in Marketing with an emphasis on consumer psychology. I always respond that they should apply to the programs with the greatest levels of research productivity and scholarship, and they should apply to many programs. The focus on research productivity is important for at least two reasons: (a) doctoral students are more likely to get involved in faculty research if there are numerous faculty research projects to get involved in, and (b) research productivity is the single most important determinant of business school reputation (see Armstrong, J. S., & Sperry, T. [1994]. The ombudsman: Business school prestige -- Research versus teaching. Interfaces, 24, 13-43).
Accordingly, I decided to compile of list of articles (actually, my doctoral student, David Houghton, compiled the list) published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology, the Journal of Consumer Research, and the Journal of Marketing Research between January 1, 1990 and September 1, 1995. The list was compiled by university (rather than by author) to avoid double counting in the case of multiple authors from the same university. However, because universities serve as the units of analysis, double counting does occur when an article was published by multiple authors from different universities. JCP, JCR, and JMR were selected because these are the three leading outlets for consumer psychology research (in terms of rejection rates and quality). Other leading marketing journals (i.e., Journal of Marketing, Marketing Science) were not included because relatively few consumer psychology articles appear in these outlets (the Journal of Marketing specializes in marketing strategy, and Marketing Science specializes in marketing econometrics).
Most of the Marketing Ph.D. programs listed below do not require undergraduate or master's degrees in business, but most programs require GMAT scores of at least 600 for admission. Most of the top programs require GMAT scores approaching or exceeding 700. The typical Ph.D. student interested in consumer psychology majors in Marketing, minors in Psychology, spends two years on coursework, and spends an additional two years working on the dissertation and other related research. The academic job market in Marketing has become increasingly competitive in recent years (but not quite as competitive as the academic job market in Psychology), and most Marketing Ph.D. programs have responded by decreasing the number of students admitted each year.
