Foreign Language and Area Studies
The International Programs Office strongly encourages interested first-year graduate students to apply for the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships.
Criteria For FLAS Fellowships
The FLAS Fellowships are designed for those students who are interested in becoming "world area specialists," either in their course of study or careers. Applicants must be full-time graduate or professional students and either US citizens or permanent residents. These special graduate-level fellowships are available for both the academic year and summer quarter.
If granted an academic-year award, students will take one foreign language class and one area studies course each quarter along with their other coursework. MBA elective courses can be considered for area studies courses.
For those who receive a summer fellowship, they will take an intensive full-time language course over several weeks. Both types of fellowships receive a tuition and fee waiver as well as stipend. The FLAS Fellowship can be completed at OSU, another U.S. institution or abroad.
FLAS Fellowship Application Process
Each year, the International Programs Office will offer information sessions and guidance to those first-year graduate students who are interested in pursuing a fellowship. The deadline for Summer 2013 and Academic Year 2013-2014 applications is February 1, 2013 at 4:30pm.
