The Real Estate Mentor Program provides students with the unique opportunity to expand their education and learn about the real estate industry from the inside: from those who have experience and expertise in the industry. Each interested student will be partnered with an industry professional to create an ongoing one-on-one relationship.
Student mentees will gain tremendous knowledge of the industry and experience networking with professionals while receiving advice on internship and career decisions. Mentors will have the benefit of working with bright and energetic students, the satisfaction of being a role model, and the opportunity to apply one's professional experience in career advising.
The student and professional will be formally matched for a period of one academic year, from fall quarter to the end of summer quarter the following calendar year. At that time the student and professional will be able to renew their match (if the student has not graduated in the prior year) or be matched with a new person. Matches do occur during the academic year, but will still conclude or be renewed at the end of summer quarter.
Students meet with their mentors throughout the school year. Pairs are expected to meet, in some capacity, every month. Often, pairs meet for lunch but are encouraged to spend time at their mentors' offices, learning how real estate professionals manage their businesses, serve clients, work with their peers, and contribute to their communities. Pairs are also encouraged to visit ongoing projects in which their mentors are engaged, attend professional meetings or conferences and network with real estate professionals (an experience that students find most valuable.) Mentors are also encouraged to help students on school projects and case competitions and notify the student about possible job or internship leads or openings. Mentors are not expected to find jobs for the student mentees.
Interested students must fill out an application. The application helps use gauge each student’s expereince and area of interest and will also be used during the matching process. The Center will then select the best matches, making sure that each qualified student is matched up with a mentor.
Interested mentors must fill out a biographical questionnaire. All prospective mentors are then placed into a candidate pool for consideration of a match with a student mentee. The questionnaire helps use gauge the mentor’s area of expertise and will also be used during the matching process. The Center will then select the best matches, making sure that each qualified student is matched up with a mentor. Mentors who are not matched up from the candidate pool will receive a higher priority for being matched the following year and throughout the school year. They will also still be encouraged to participate in many of the Center’s other events, from our speaker series and speaking in our courses to being judges for case competitions and mentors for case competition teams.
