Why a Finance PhD at Ohio State?

1. World-class Faculty

The finance department at the Fisher College is among the highest ranked finance departments worldwide in terms of research productivity and academic reputation.

Independent studies bear testament to this success. The department was placed 9th out of the 100 most productive finance departments ranked world-wide, based on publications in the top tier of finance journals. The study by Chan, Chen, and Steiner in the Winter 2002 issue of Financial Management examined the period of 1990 to 2001 and evaluated 923 departments from around the world (see updated rankings on the authors' website). Another similar study based on top-tier publications in finance from 1991-2005 ranks our department as 9th (see top-20 US finance departments).

In another recent study by Chan and Fok in the Fall 2003 issue of the Journal of Financial Research, finance departments world-wide were ranked based on their membership on editorial boards of 16 leading finance journals from 1985 to 2000. Such representation provides a quality indicator of the finance department, since editors and members of editorial boards of quality journals are trusted by their peers who submit their research for publication consideration. The finance group at Ohio State ranked 9th out of 260 departments. When the rankings were adjusted for journal quality, OSU moved up one rank to 8th. In fact, OSU faculty have been or are currently actively involved in senior editorial and editorial board positions at the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, and Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.

A number of OSU’s finance professors have taken leadership positions in the major national and international associations. Several have served or currently serve as presidents or directors of the American Finance Association (AFA), the Western Finance Association (WFA) and the Financial Management Association. This further attests to the prominence of OSU's finance faculty within the finance profession.

In addition, several members of the finance faculty had previously been recognized for the impact of their published research. One of the leading journals in the field, the Journal of Financial Economics (JFE) identified and recognized their "All Star Papers" which were the top two papers by average citations per year within each volume plus all papers with five or more citations per year for the years, 1974-1996. Twelve such papers were published by Fisher College finance colleagues. In the past five years, four Finance faculty have been singled out with awards for best papers in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.
