CIO Solutions Gallery- 2013 Theme
Leading the Performance Revolution - 2013 and Beyond
We are now about to enter the fourth Revolution in human civilization. In each of the three previous Revolutions the overall state of human performance improved by an order of magnitude:
- The Neolithic/Agricultural Revolution (c. 10,000 BCE);
- The Industrial Revolution (c. 1760-1960); and
- The Information Revolution (c. 1960-2012)
As we migrate through this new still-to-be-named period of change, one thing is clear. Our success will depend upon our ability to transcend the current general stall in performance being seen across the economy. Some observers have labeled this stall ‘turboparalysis’1- “a prolonged condition of furious motion without movement in any particular direction, a situation in which the engine roars and the wheels spin, but the vehicle refuses to move.”
To now successfully evolve we will need to elevate our overall personal and enterprise performance to an entirely new level.
Throughout 2013, the “CIO Solutions Gallery” will conduct a series of programs that will closely and sequentially examine what is in store for the fourth Revolution. | May Gallery | March Gallery | August Gallery | September Gallery | December Gallery |

Gallery 2: Crafting IT's New Performance Vision - May 16, 2013
The topic of enhanced enterprise performance brings to mind one of the most often used and mis-attributed quotes of all time, “If it was easy, everyone would do it.” However, the reality is....they don’t.
We have the gear. In these twenty years since the Balanced Scorecard hit the scene, it has become one of the world’s most popular business tools for helping companies measure and manage their level of execution. Newer innovations have also allowed companies to marry traditional performance measurement with enhanced analytics to drive fact-based decision-making and generate competitive advantage. And yet, that is not enough.
All of this still requires a lot of work, and success is not guaranteed. It still requires the proper leadership, the right performance indicators and metrics, and the appropriate technologies for of this all to work. As a whole, we are not there yet. But some companies are.
We began 2013 by examining some of the impediments to IT’s new performance mandate. In this next session we will take a closer look at the vision of what is possible, and what we can learn from that. Detailed agenda

If you are delighting in “doing more with less”, or if you are contentedly “keeping the lights on with Five- Nine’s precision,” you – like Alice in Lewis Carroll’s edgy fairy tale – may be falling behind.1
The technology game has changed. There is a new set of expectations regarding IT performance. World-class CIOs are increasingly expected to not only grow the business; they are also expected to stimulate/orchestrate/cerebrate strategies designed to “render the competition irrelevant.” It is time for IT to stand up and stand out. It is time to redefine what IT is capable of achieving. IT has become truly binary; i.e., you are either a high-performance headline, or you may be destined to be an epitaph on a career tombstone.
Throughout this year, this program series will be closely examining how ahead-of-the-curve leaders and enterprises are stepping up their game. The new world of high performance IT is reminiscent of the harsh tooth-and-claw realities of nature:
Every morning in Africa, a Gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a Lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a Lion or a Gazelle….when the sun comes up, you'd better be running.
Join us in this first session of 2013 where we will establish an appropriate context for understanding “running” IT.

In both August and September we will interrogate high performance pioneers with an eye on extracting what it really takes to move from “now” to “next”.

In both August and September we will interrogate high performance pioneers with an eye on extracting what it really takes to move from “now” to “next”. | Gallery 5: December 11, 2013
In December we will examine and calibrate the processes and methodologies that will assure we remain on course, on time, and well informed during this evolutionary journey. |
The CIO Breakfast Gallery (part of the nationally acclaimed CIO Solutions Gallery series) is an ongoing forum where senior IT leaders and their peer officers come together in a comfortable setting to share their experiences and insights, as well as collectively and collaboratively attack common issues.
Uniquely organized around “peer learning”, this provocative program has received high praise among participating CIOs and other senior executives in the technology and/or operations leadership community. It helps to build an improved and creative personal network of peers and executives devoted to sharing best practices, renewing their skills on an ongoing basis, and raising the level of technical “literacy” and effectiveness within their organizations.
