MBA 801x-Professional Development: Leadership and Team Effectiveness

This course will have a decidedly ‘practical’ and personal focus. That is, to help participants explore and identify strategies and actions that enable them to be more effective leaders in organizations throughout their careers, as well as be more productive members of results-focused teams. While technical and professional skills are a necessary foundation for success in one’s chosen occupation, it is increasingly apparent that understanding the behavior of people in organizations, as well as your own leadership effectiveness are the pivotal factors to success over the course of your career. Throughout your career, in any type of organization (business or otherwise), you will be asked to perform and achieve results along with and through other people – either as a colleague and team member, or as a leader. This course will examine what we know about effective team performance, as well as what we know about leadership practices that drive high performance organizations.

MHR 847 Advanced Topics in Leadership Effectiveness: Strategy Implementation and Execution           This course will have a decided ‘practical applications’ bias.Effective leaders are able to galvanize people around a compelling, inspirational vision and strategy, and to then deal with people in ways that bring out their best ideas and effort. This course will view the subject of strategy development, implementation and execution from the leader’s perspective. Many of the long-time gurus in the area of “strategy” (e.g. Gary Hamel, Ram Charan, Kaplan & Norton) have more recently emphasized the importance of good execution of strategy. In fact, many have suggested that the best intellectual strategy will fail if not executed effectively. This course will briefly touch on the elements of good strategy, but will focus primarily on what it takes to ensure organizational alignment, implementation and execution of strategic priorities. The important role of organizational culture, leadership, organization structure, communications, compensation and metrics will be evaluated relative to effective execution of strategy.                         view course syllabus
