Teaching

MHR 841-Business & the Environment How a company interacts with the environment is becoming a strategic variable for many corporations, especially manufacturing companies or those who supply them. Strategic variables are associated with issues that convey competitive advantage. The business-environment interface contains many acute opportunities to gain -- or loose -- competitive advantage. Such opportunities pertain to image/reputation, product quality, risk management and cost reduction, just to mention a few.

Business & The Environment will teach students how to integrate consideration of the environment into thinking about business processes to improve a company’s competitive advantage. The course will revolve around the concept of environmental sustainability and will investigate two important dimensions of this concept. One will be translating the concept into operational terms and the other will be establishing the business case for sustainable business practices.

MHR 694.11 - Introduction to Sustainability

How a company interacts with the environment and how it performs as a socially responsible corporate citizen are becoming strategic variables for all organizations – for profit corporations and non-profit organizations alike.

Sustainability captures the broad and diverse set of issues with which organizations must deal to succeed strategically and perform competitively against rising expectations for environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Often the informal metaphor “green” is used synonymously with sustainability, but as will be demonstrated in this course, sustainability is the more comprehensive term.
