MHR 490 New Venture Creation
New Venture Creation is a survey course that explores the context of and comprehensive process of personal enterprise and new venture creation.Concepts covered in this class include idea creation, feasibility assessment, and evaluation and analysis of business opportunities. Students will be exposed to the critical issues of new venture strategy and business planning through readings, case analyses, guest speakers, a team-based computerized simulation, final team project (written and oral), and interactive class discussions. The case analyses, guest speakers, simulation and final project provide a wide range of examples to demonstrate and test the students’ knowledge regarding specific new venture creation issues covered in class. In the computerized simulation/final project, students will integrate all of their knowledge in the context of one new venture and a competitive strategy environment.

How a company interacts with the environment and how it performs as a socially responsible corporate citizen are becoming strategic variables for all organizations – for profit corporations and non-profit organizations alike.
Sustainability captures the broad and diverse set of issues with which organizations must deal to succeed strategically and perform competitively against rising expectations for environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Often the informal metaphor “green” is used synonymously with sustainability, but as will be demonstrated in this course, sustainability is the more comprehensive term.

This course is an honors course offered to honors students in the business school and honors students in the entrepreneurship minor. This course is a projects course. We will be completing social enterprise projects for non-profit organizations in the Central Ohio Area. Students will work in teams of five to complete a project for a non-profit which includes both a paper and a presentation to the non-profit based on the deliverable defined for the team.

The purpose of this course is to study human behavior in organizational settings. In particular, we will be looking at topics related to the behavior of individuals (e.g., leadership, values and attitudes, motivation, etc.) the behavior of groups (e.g., teamwork), and organizational-level topics such as culture and organization change. We will also discuss many of the organizational practices (such as selection, training and development, compensation, etc.) that have a direct effect on these behaviors and the organization's resulting performance.

An organization's capacity to realize human resources as a competitive advantage begins with a successful staffing policy. The effectiveness of staffing systems is a key variable in meeting organizational goals. This course provides an introduction to the staffing process, covering topics such as strategic staffing, human resource planning, job analysis, recruitment, assessment, and making final hiring decisions. Various selection tools and recruitment methods are discussed, combined with a focus on selection system design. The course is approached with the intent of providing pragmatic information necessary for meaningful decision-making.

While technical and professional skills are a necessary foundation for success in one’s chosen occupation, it is increasingly apparent that understanding the behavior of people in organizations, as well as your own leadership effectiveness are the pivotal factors to success over the course of your career. Throughout your career, in any type of organization (business or otherwise), you will be asked to perform and achieve results along with and through other people – either as a colleague and team member, or as a leader. The course materials combine theory development with both examples and case analyses that illuminate and challenge the theory. Global trade and industry have become increasingly complex and prevalent in all business activities. The purpose of this course is to help you effectively negotiate and make deals in a cross-cultural context. The course is intended to introduce students to the historical, economic, cultural, social and geopolitical circumstances of China’s rise, and, in particular, its global business repercussions. The focus is on the impact of China on world business, including, but not limited to, how companies can leverage the rise to sustain, defend and develop their advantage in a new global marketplace where China is a major participant. At the end of the course, students will be familiar with basic features of the Chinese business environment, the challenges faced by foreign companies in China, the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese firms as they enter global markets as well as the impact on the United States and other nations, their firms, customers and employees.

Current Legal Issues in Business MBA 833
Businesses operate in a challenging legal and ethical environment. We will review the practical realities of changing legal trends, analyze current legal events as they impact businesses and discuss the legal implications of your decisions as managers. We will frequently have guest speakers who are in-house and external corporate attorneys. Hopefully we will visit a local court to observe a trial in session.
