Saturday saw the beginning of the Urban Meyer era at THE Ohio State University. A slow start was followed by several exciting scores (if you're a Buckeye fan, that is). Without looking at the archives of the 2010-2011 season, I can't say with certainty that the Buckeyes scored 56 points in their first 4 games combined last year (they must have, but the fact that I'm not certain should tell you something about my recollection of last year's offensive prowess). All in all, it was an exciting game to watch as a Buckeye fan.
With grad school in full swing now, it's fair to say one thing is certain: Everyone and everybody seems to want your attention. Let me elaborate. First, your professors, they all have passion for what they teach and are very excited to share that wealth of knowledge they have with their students. Whether it be economics, the NPV of a capital budgeting problem, or even professional development and mannerisms; they point is they want to teach you; therefore asking for your attention.
The thought of meeting so many new people was both daunting and exciting. Hundreds of questions ran through my mind. Did I make the right decision? Have I prepared myself well enough for what’s ahead? How in the world am I going to master 50+ Excel models in just seven weeks??? I am pretty sure I was not the only one feeling this way. As a part of our orientation, we went to Summit Vision out in Westerville, Ohio. There, we participated in various team building activities like the pamper pole and the ropes course.
Before actually studying abroad, I often envisioned it as wild, fun and free, flooded with parties, etc. It takes less than a week for me to realize how wrong I was. Time seems to flow much more slowly here than back in Beijing. People are nice and smile a lot. Even the postman across the street says “hi!” to me.
Living abroad is tough, but the only promise you can make to those who love you is to take care of yourself. To those who plan to go to or are already in the US far away from home, there are some tips I can share:
