Fisher College of Business Annual Report 2005

Dean's Message

This past year, the Fisher College of Business and The Ohio State University lost an extraordinary leader, and I lost a trusted advisor and close friend, Max M. Fisher. Max was a model for those committed to making a positive difference in the world. He knew that personal success was more than knowledge, experience or recognition. He built his life through passion, inspiration, integrity and hard work.

Max’s leadership and support helped propel Fisher College into national prominence. He believed that effective faculty must be able to convey knowledge and enthusiasm in an environment that promotes active learning. Our state-of-the-art campus is testimony to that belief. But his ultimate vision was to create an unparalleled approach to learning and leadership guided by world-class faculty and enriched by students, alumni, executives and the greater community. This year’s annual report honors his vision as well as the accomplishments of the Fisher College faculty he felt were the driving force behind the success of our graduates.

Selecting faculty on the basis of their ability to conduct high-impact research and teach both creatively and effectively means selecting faculty who are passionate about their subjects and desire to communicate what they know through new and innovative methods. At Fisher College, this translates into creating ideas that make a difference in the practice of management. Our faculty delivers impact. In fact, Fisher College professors are among the top authorities and thought leaders in a wide variety of areas. They do this through their editorial positions with leading journals and by stimulating the research of others who constantly cite their work. Their scholarship is important in the classroom as well as the boardroom. They are far from armchair theorists— their partnerships with the corporate community make them frequent consultants with Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurial start-ups, nonprofit organizations and government agencies. Their ability to transfer this active involvement into the classroom enriches the education of participants in all our programs.

This enthusiasm for sharing knowledge is what Max found so exciting about the Fisher College community. He recognized that substantive teaching goes hand in hand with the ability to offer curriculum and programs that anticipate market need and encourage entrepreneurial activities. That philosophy has enabled Fisher College to make great strides in recruiting and developing a faculty of thought leaders who value curiosity and understand that true knowledge is found through challenging the status quo. Nowhere is this more evident than in our delivery of executive education programs, our solutionsoriented research centers and our laboratory-based research facilities.

We continue to advance because we understand that success is not simply a product of individual efforts but of partnerships between creative and dedicated people focused on achieving great things. In this spirit of collaboration, we strive to be flexible, innovative and courageous— characteristics that mirror Max Fisher’s values.

Max once described his alma mater as a place that provided him with opportunities to take risks, shape his own future and develop a foundation to make a significant impact on the world of business. His vision is what fuels the Fisher College of Business today.
