college on the move |

In
August 1998, faculty, students and staff moved into Fisher and
Gerlach Halls. The opening of these first two buildings marked
the completion of Phase I of the six-building project.
Last
years graduate students were the first to take classes, conduct
research, interact with corporate partners and explore career
options in the new facilities. Highlights of Gerlach Hall include:
- Tiered
and flat classrooms equipped with individual computer ports
and seminar and breakout rooms for small group study.
- The
Batten Investment Management Lab designed for todays
student of finance with Internet, videoconferencing and satellite
uplink capabilities.
-
The Bank One Graduate Student Lounge, a beautiful gathering
space for study and interaction.
- A
career services area with the latest in resume and job listing
technology, as well as career information and counseling services.
- A
recruiters center containing private rooms and meeting
areas for interviewing job candidates, with Internet access,
telephone and fax providing a "virtual office."
Scheduled
to open in the fall of 1999 are Schoenbaum Hall (undergraduate program),
Mason Hall (library and computing), and Pfahl Hall (executive education),
with a sixth building, a 151-room executive residence, to be completed
in 2002.

The
new business campus provided a state-of-the-art learning environment
for Fisher students, faculty and executives.
Web-based instructional support
At the Fisher Colleges chalk-free campus, students in
many courses can review PowerPoint lecture notes, join in course-related
online chat rooms, "discuss" one-on-one with faculty members
during electronic office hours, take quizzes and review their
grades--from any computer, anywhere. Some faculty members have
established course-related Web sites with links to case studies
and other valuable information.
Internet
access
Students with laptops have access to more than 3,000 active
data ports in the new buildings, which provide instant access
to the Internet.
Videoconferencing
Through the colleges "premier partnership" with Nasdaq-Amex,
videoconferencing capabilities make it possible for student
investment management team members to link with traders, analysts
and executives live from Wall Street. Live videoconferences
have also been held with executives from Microsoft and undergraduate
honors students from the University of Witwatersrand in South
Africa.
Multiple language capabilities
In the Berry Auditorium, lectures can be translated into four
different languages simultaneously using a wireless headphone
system, allowing students, faculty and visiting executives from
around the globe to hear their native tongue.
Satellite capabilities
Distance education is a focus at the Fisher College with the
ability to broadcast and receive satellite programming in classrooms
throughout the business campus.
Video on demand
Expanded use of this technology includes review tapes of classroom
presentations, and role-plays and preview tapes of new material
for critiquing and in-class discussion. Students can access
the video-on-demand library of course materials from any computer
and come to class prepared for in-depth discussion of content.
They also can view recruiting videos from the career services
library, enabling them to better prepare for interviews.
Smart podiums
Touch screen devices provide control of lights, screens, projectors,
computers and videoconferencing technology at the podium.

 |
| Fisher
and Gerlach Halls were officially dedicated in October of 1998.
The two-day event included a "technology tour" in Gerlach classrooms,
featuring a videoconference stock purchase through the Nasdaq
market site in New York and video connections with college alumni
and friends in Rotterdam, Spain and London. Former U.S. Trade
Representative Carla Hills and Peter Ueberroth, former baseball
commissioner and president/CEO of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing
Committee, were among the guest speakers. Leslie H. Wexner, chairman
and founder of The Limited, Inc., announced a $1 million gift
to establish a Fisher Council on Global Trade and Technology in
honor of his mentor and friend, Max M. Fisher. |
