J.A. “Fred” Brothers

J.A. "Fred" Brothers served most recently as Executive Vice President of Ashland, Inc., where he was responsible for Ashland's Petroleum group, consisting of Ashland Petroleum Company, Super-America, and The Valvoline Company.

Dr. Brothers joined Ashland Oil in 1967. In 1973, after holding a number of positions in refining, engineering, crude oil supply, and transportation, Dr. Brothers was named Vice President, Engineering and Research. His appointment as Vice President of Ashland Chemical Company in 1975 led to subsequent appointments as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer in 1981 and President in 1983. The following year, he was elected a senior vice president of the corporation and was named a group operating officer in 1988. He was elected Executive Vice President in 1997.

Dr. Brothers is a former member of the boards of directors of AECOM Technology (Los Angeles), Ameritrust NA (Cleveland), Ashland Coal (St. Louis), Children's Hospital (Columbus), Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus), Defense Enterprise Fund (Washington, D.C.), Geon Co. (Cleveland), GTS Duratek (Baltimore), Key Bank (Cleveland), Ohio Dominican College (Columbus), and Society NA (Cleveland). His long-time relationship with The Ohio State University has included service as an adjunct professor.

A native of Huntington, West Virginia, Dr. Brothers earned his doctorate in chemical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and an advanced management degree from Harvard Business School.
